Well, according to the news reports, it appears that the predicted snow storm did in fact hit the US east coast. NYC was hit particularly hard.

That being said, the NYCity government idiot who ordered the shutting down of bus service mid-day deserves to be tossed into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound (wearing a well insulated snowsuit).

Closing public transit may sometimes be necessary - but to do it mid-day with 80 minutes notice is just insane and stupid.

Have you ever noticed after a major snowfall, sidewalks generally always get shoveled very quickly by residents and small businesses?

And then there are those who NEVER, EVER shovel snow from sidewalks around their property? Who are they? Schools, any government facility, hospitals and large corporations.

Churches seem to fall into the 50/50 category, some churches shovel their sidewalks, some just don't.

Why am I not surprised by who shovels sidewalks and who doesn't?

Around here township regulations mandate a clear sidewalk or footpath within 24 hours after the snow stops falling. I doubt they'd try to enforce it after as large a snowfall as we just got, but technically it's on the books.

It makes me grateful for snowblowers (we borrowed a neighbors). Clearing our sidewalk alone to township standards involved moving 300 - 400 cubic feet of snow, to say nothing of the driveway.

The schools right next to my house tends to do a pretty great job of clearing its walks. The big drug store down the street certainly doesn't, however. Especially on the back of the store that meets a side street. Still their property, still their responsibility.

Same laws here. I'm just noting that schools, hospitals, government and large corporations routinely ignore that law. It is especially galling in the case of schools.

So, this week is the first week of February.

Today is 45F (8C) and forecast is for 40 to 50F (6-10C) all this week.

This most definitely is NOT normal weather for Toronto in February! Normally, in February around here, daytime highs are always below 32F/0C.

This week we've had some actual winter weather. I was wondering if we would see any winter at all this year.

It has snowed a bit (inch or so on a couple of days) and today is fucking cold -26C/-14F and that's without the windchill!

This is the first time this winter that it has actually been seriously cold. Temperatures under -25C can be deadly dangerous if you are not fully prepared for it.

It is 35 Celsius [again] today (95 F).

This is definitely one of the hottest summers I've ever experienced.

Holy shit I haven't seen more than five minutes or so of rain in like a month. That's an exaggeration, maybe, slightly, but not much of one.

I need a beer.
