Default I say LGB, not LGBT

LGBT refers to the community of Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals.

A transsexual is someone who has had an operation to change their sex.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transsexuals (LGBT).
I am not gay, but I am anti-homophobia.

But it annoys me that Transsexuals should somehow latch onto Lesbians, gays and bisexuals.

First of all, gay people who change sex - they clearly choose not to be gay, by changing their sex, so they aren't exactly showing loyalty to their sexuality. And any homophobic person is going to be phobic against transsexuals too, so it is not an escape from hate.

Changing sex is a luxury operation carried out by surgeons who are needed to perform vital operations on people who can't afford to pay for them.

If they must spend their money then do so, but I am committed to the cause of anti-homophobia, but will not lift a finger in the cause of the people who indulge in this kind of luxury operation.

No. I'm awestruck by the amount of bigotry and ignorance toward transexuals.

Do you not think it is a luxury operation?

No I do not. In the first place, it is a legitimate medical condition and it is gender corrective surgery. Second, not all transexuals have surgery. Some have partial surgery, some suffice with hormone treatments, some are content to dress as the opposite gender, or merely obscure their own. Some suffer in silence.

It's probably hard for you to understand gender identity issues if you've never experienced them.

No doubt you feel like a man, correct? Your brain and emotions tell you that you are unequivocally male. Now imagine, if you can, that despite all that, you had the genitalia of a woman, and society insisted that you were female. That in essence (though oversimplified) is what it means to be transexual.

No, my brain and emotions don't tell me I'm male at all.
I have some masculine characteristics and some feminine characteristics.

I think changing one's sex is a luxury operation, like changing one's hair colour, or having a face-lift.

But we can agree to differ

You clearly fundamentally don't understand gender identity issues.

They aren't "changing their sex." They are bringing their physical gender identity into line with their mental gender identity.

Are you completely ignoring the fact that you can be transexual without having any surgical procedure whatsoever?

Unlikely.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it's all too common. It's very hard for most people to get outside of their own perceptions about the world.

I see - you know better than me what my brain and emotions is telling me. Is that what you are saying?
