I've spent a few years planning a hiking trip through north Wales - specifically to tour Edward's great castles at Caernarfon, Conwy, Anglesey and Harlech - all built by Master James of St. George (aka Master Jacob of Savoy).

I was planning to continue that trip with a hike across Hadrian's Wall in England - and doing lots of research to find various converted mill houses, manor houses, tower houses and/or castles to stay in along the way.

I call these kinds of trips taking a "pub & castle crawl".

Boys Own Annual stuff. Hiking up Mt Snowdon with a staff and rucksack, and finding the occasional escapee from prison.

I've been to Hadrian's Wall. Not a huge amount of it left. That is what I'd call one bleak duty in the time of the Romans. Garrisoning the wall on a winters night with no pants on. They didn't join the army for the government to pay for their degree either.
