It's a very beautiful ship. The last time I was "cruising" on a river, it was in a boat that was four feet wide at the widest.

Cruises aren't all that interesting to me, in general, though I bet a river cruise is exponentially less dull than an ocean one.

I think you'll find that the Volga is an enormously wide river, which is almost like being on an ocean.

Apparently, the attractiveness of ocean cruises comes from their usage as mobile hotels.

Many cruises sail only at night and anchor at different ports each day.

The strangest way to travel on a river that I read about, is the raft that some guys in Rostov built

They used barrels

Wood

and penoplast.

Lengh: 10.9 m
Width: 6.0 m
Height (except flag): 3.2 m

Indeed. Volga is huge

Largest river in Europe and one of the longest in the world, at least. Out of the twenty largest cities of Russia, eleven, including Moscow, are situated in the Volga's drainage basin.

True. I would not go on a Italian cruise ship though. Remember Costa Concordia

I would love to ride around on that raft.

I don't know about Russia but a primary attraction (and major revenue generator) on US ocean going cruise ships is casino style gambling.

We are leaving today, in two hours, for that cruise I promised her. We must go now, while it is still warm on the Volga. Unfortunately, the Chkalov had an unexpected mechanical issue, and is now in dock, in repairs. Which means I can still go visit my old friends there, on-board, but we cannot cruise on it. Which, actually, is fine, because we will be going on the Lomonosov instead.

River boat Mikhail Lomonosov

is newer then the Chkalov, built in 1962 in Budapest

I actually know the captain, Andrei Vasiliev

because he was once an officer on the Chkalov

It is nicer, better maintained inside then the Chkalov.

The main lobby

Hallway

Stairway

Tea/entertainment room on lower deck at the nose

First class passenger quarters on the main (middle) deck

mini-bar

Clock

The television monitor is connected to several satellite channels, and passengers can also view footage from several cameras mounted aboard the boat

Fine for smoking inside the quarters - 2,500 rubles

Window

Importantly, it has own bathroom

Another thing we like: there is a children's play room aboard, which means we can take the little ones along

There is also a disco-bar

I am actually thinking about maybe giving my family a real gift, and taking the VIP Quarters, the #300

Two bathrooms, left

and right

Guest room in the VIP Quarters

Yes, I think it would be a great idea. When I was working on those boats, they always said to me, this will be your life, down there in the machine room, that is it, that is all for you. Well, now I will come back and cruise in VIP Quarters lol What a middle finger to all their faces... Karina will not like it though. Not modest for her, plus, what if her human rights activist colleagues saw her travelling VIP class lol I understand.
