Dan Brown is a great....plagiarizer. There's nothing, literally nothing, original in the Da Vinci Code. Some of those themes are literally a thousand years old. It's a random mish-mash of the occult tradition which Eco mocks so brilliantly.

I haven't -or ever will- read anything else from Dan Brown so I won't comment on other works.

Oh, and to learn about CERN, here's the place:

I've already suggested that Nick ought to read Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum. I thought it was in this thread, but it must have been in another [related] thread.

But the general public have taken him to their bosom? Who are you to argue with the general public?

The general public is generally uneducated. In most western countries, 2/3 of the population has no education past high school. That's Dan Brown's market.

ummm.... A sane person should at least argue with the general public.

I do think Dan Brown is a genius. I don't think any old Tom, Dick or Harry could have written Deception Point, which is CRAMMED with all sorts of interesting facts. However, I'm beginning to think that his books lack something in mental challenge for the reader, and that his characters are rather unengaging.

Dan Brown is good. I like his work although didn't care for his most famous one, Da Vinci Code. The two I liked the best were Digital Fortress and Deception Point. Both were solid thrillers and highly enjoyable.

Brown is talented and I like his style. He has short chapters but ends with a minor cliffhanger each. Those are the writers who's books you find yourself having a hard time putting down.

I think he's a genius at what he does - and yes, his ingredients do include cliff-hanger chapter endings, but they also include educating his readers. That last point is as instrumental to his success, as are the cliff-hangers, I believe.
