Default Monument to Courage is Planned

Money is being collected for the creation of a monument to include bronze statues of Edward Snowden, Julian Assange, and Chelsea (Bradley) Manning, along with an empty chair symbolic of the wish for another champion of truth to emerge.

Betraying your country is a act of "courage" now?

I will never understand the West... We Russians kill our traitors, usually in a slow, torturous manner, like Litvinenko

and you Americans... what? Revere them???

Well Assange isn't American, but he's kind of a shit head so kind of fuck him.

Manning and Snowden both provided a great service to our country. They just did it at cross purposes with the government. That's not treason.

I think, perhaps, the West is less likely to equate betraying the government with betraying the country (or "the people"). Manning and Snowden would argue that, in letting the people know what the government was secretly doing to them, they were serving their country.

I suppose... That is not the sort of logic one routinely encounters over here

Tom Palven, I've said before that what's bad in the USA is always ten times worse in Russia. Read HimHimselfAndHe's first post in this thread please.

By the way, did Snowden reveal anything other than the fact that the US government can do the same as any crisp-eating, cola guzzling hacker?

I don't know, but all but a tiny percentage of North Americans still believe that Big Uncle Loves You , even if he is no better than an ethically-challenged, crisp-eating, cola-guzzling hacker.

Treason is a term defined entirely by one's politics.

As Donkey noted, quite a few of us don't consider Snowden or Manning to have committed treason because they didn't actually betray their country.

The ones seeking to persecute them are the ones committing treason against their country.
