Let's say you have two people, who are both in exactly the same financial situation, namely about average for their country.

The difference is that one of them has been rich for most of their life, and lived in luxury - only recently did they fall on hard times, and must now put up with modesty.

The other one has always been in a financial situation about average to their country.

On the strength of the information provided, which one would you choose to be, if you had to choose?

Second.

But I am in the 'very wealthy' category now, and know what? I like it.

I was the recipient of a dubious honor this May, some blogger photographed my cortege in Moscow, like they do to other rich people

Yes... Ten years ago, I gazed in envy upon rich men in shiny black limousines, speeding past me on the street. Now, I am one of them. Riding in a bulletproof Mercedes, with a armored Escalade full of armed men behind me. I do not usually, have an escort car. But, that day, I was meeting a tough Duma member, guy with strong mafia connections, who would have his own thugs with him. Those ones respect only strength, so had to show such.

Point is, that is a big step for a man here. You get a photo of your vehicles onto a site like that, you made it And I love it. I have no qualms, I earned my wealth. Even Karina is settling ito the glamorous lifestyle of a rich Russian man's wife. She admitted to me recently that feels blessed that no longer has to do much at home, because we have a nanny for the children, a cook, and a maid to clean. I built this life from nothing. I am happy about that.

Thank you very much indeed - both for your answer to my question and for your long and well-argued support to the notion that being rich is more enjoyable than being poor.

I have never understood why people who always saying that children shouldn't be spoilt, are perfectly happy to spoil themselves.

The logic goes - don't let the child have too easy/luxurious a life, because he/she needs to get used to the difficulties of life. So far, so logical.

But why on earth do I never hear anyone say "I'd better not have that nice luxury - I may have hard financial times in the future, and I want to be able to cope better with such times, by not being spoilt."??? I think like that, and act in accordance with that way of thinking, frequently, but I don't hear anyone else say it.

I cannot understand why! Does anyone else?

It is very simple to explain - people are selfish. Rules should always apply to everyone, except me.

I would really have thought that not spoiling oneself is in one's own self-interest. As I mentioned, not spoiling oneself makes one better at coping with tough times that may come later in life, and so it's in one's self-interest not to spoil oneself.
