If you change it to 'faith in a god or gods' then what about 'religion'?

Yes, confiance is the best word here. I actually mixed up the French and English meaning of confidence myself. Kudos to the missus.

As for English, I really can't fathom how or why the usage of the term "faith" in this context troubles you. In English, religion has always been referred to as 'faith-based' in general terms.

In many ways, the term 'faith' is used to express an alternative to 'reason'.

Bishop Berkeley's solipsism argument and [translations of] Descartes argument about radical doubt both employ the term 'faith' in precisely the same way we are using it here.

Of course it isn't in the original - the original is in French!

Translations use the most appropriate word - and in the case of Descartes' argument, the most appropriate word in English is "faith" - as in faith that god exists, or faith that god is good.
The problem is that such a translation is no longer a translation but gives a meaning to a work it didn't have. If one translates a non-religious word into a word with both religious and non-religious meaning and subsequently assumes that the original argument entailed a religious meaning, then that's a corruption and not a translation. A good translation translates the meaning, not the words. One might as well use Google Translate then. I've noticed this before with other writers. You're not discussing Descartes (and others) in North America, you're discussing a home made variant of it with a different meaning.

Well, I checked further and see that Kasich signed a bunch of anti-abortion laws into law as Governor of Ohio, and that's enough for me never to support him.
