Default A tunnel to Crimea???

Here in Russia, we are trying to figure out how to connect to Crimea, across the Kerch strait.

The current idea is a huge bridge

Georgy Muradov, Crimea's envoy to the Kremlin, is arguing that a tunnel would be both cheaper to build and safer than the bridge:

Quote:
A planned bridge from mainland Russia to the newly annexed Crimean Peninsula would be dangerous and should be replaced with plans to construct a tunnel, the region's envoy to the Kremlin said Wednesday.

"It's dangerous because at least one month a year, for some time, the bridge would not be functioning because of stormy winds and sleet in the wintertime," Georgy Muradov said.

Crimea, annexed from Ukraine in March, has no land connection to Russia. But the government has begun a project to build a six-kilometer railroad and car bridge across the Kerch Strait.

Muradov said unspecified Canadian and Chinese companies have instead pitched the proposal to build a tunnel under the Kerch Strait.

He estimated the costs of a tunnel at 60 billion to 80 billion rubles ($1.4 billion to $1.8 billion), much less than the bridge, estimated at up to 228 billion rubles ($5.2 billion).

Russia's Transportation Minister Maxim Sokolov said in September that the bridge's construction was already under way and set to finish in 2018.

But Muradov said construction is still in the early stages and can be stopped in favor of a tunnel. He said Crimean officials are currently in talks with the Transportation Ministry about the issue.

Supporters are already calling this a "Russian La Manche", referring to the great tunnels that connect Britain to France, though ours would not only be for railroad, as you can see. One commentator on the article proposed inviting our friends from Palestine to help build the tunnels, they do, after all, have vast experience in this, as we now observe

The oligarch Gennady Timchenko

whose company, Stroitransgaz, has been tasked with building the bridge, also agreed, on November 5th, the tunnel would be the more advantageous alternative, and promises they could complete it in only 3 years and for just 40 billion rubles.

Given how much money is already being pumped into Crimea's infrastructural needs (http://www.themoscowtimes.com/article/510753.html that is only one example), any amount saved on this will be good, including for me, it is my bloody taxes paying for this after all

FYI, in the English press, it is called "the Chunnel" (Channel/Tunnel).

La Manche is not the tunnel, but the sea strait between France and Britain. The French refer to the tunnel as either Le tunnel sous la Manche or indeed the Chunnel.

Silly French. Everyone knows that the sea strait between France and Britain is called the English Channel!
