What brain neurons tell us about the 'hipster effect' when all contrarians end up looking the same.

People need to stop using the word "hipster." It's largely thrown around to mean anything slightly objectionable outside of the status quo. Yawn.

Who, me?
Must have missed this at the time of posting. I understand the mathematics in the paper (they're simple) but I don't have a clue what a hipster is or why that applies specifically to me?

Looks like a hipster is the opposite of a conformist.

Isn't that a good thing?

It would be if it were not for the apparent fact that these so-called hipsters seem to have the same herd behaviour as conformists, only in juxtaposition. A sheep which wants to be black when all other sheep are white and white when all other sheep are black is still defining itself in direct consequence of the conformist behaviour of the majority.

A genuine non-conformist doesn't even know whether the sheep are going with white or black this season.

I've wondered, myself, if everyone were extolling the virtues of free markets, free enterprise, and open borders if I would suddenly discover the wonders of authoritarian statism, but I think nah, free enterprise actually does work, to the benefit of all.

It appears that the term 'hipster' has two meanings that are rather different, but are often conflated.

A) old term of 'hipster' was associated with non-conformity, bad/unique taste in fashion, and an obsession with rare and underground music that no one had ever hear of.

B) new term of 'hipster' seems to be a new label for yuppies - typically upscale urban dwellers with too much money and cafe lattes. They are definitely of the conformist types and dress alike.

Seems to be that people over 40 mean the older sense of the term, younger people tend to use the newer sense of the term. The media of course will always conflate the two as being one and the same just because they are idiots.

Meh. It's mostly used as a pejorative, which makes it effectively meaningless.

The 'yuppie' label has always been perjorative. The yuppies themselves were just too fucking self-absorbed and lacking awareness to realize it.

But I definitely find the term 'hipster' being regularly used to describe the kind of people moving into way over-priced newly constructed condo-loft buildings - and the kind of places they like to shop or dine at. Designer baby-carriages seem to be associated wtih them these days, which is why find the term so similar to the older term of 'yuppies'.
