I'm an a-football-ist. Obviously we have weekly meetings and seek to ban football just to spite the football-ists. We've yet to elect a general spokesperson for global a-football-ism though as the a-theists appear to have.

The atheists didn't annoint these guys as the official spokespeople for atheists - they appointed themselves and the mass media went along with it.

Btw, we've had several threads at this forum over the years where a non-atheist would cite one of those guys as representative of atheists - which is why I posted this. For the most part I normally just ignore these guys as irrelevant idiots.

I made a mistake - I didn't notice that you said it was non-atheists who'd posted those threads. But would you mind providing an example of such a thread. I know that shekib82 has spoken of Sam Harris's and Bill Maher's criticism of islam, but has any non-atheist really cited celebrity atheists as representative of atheists? And could you please provide an example?

shekib82 bringing up two celebrity atheists, but rather on their criticism of islam, than on their atheism.
http://www.discussionworldforum.com/...1440#post91440

Hitchens here talking about the war in Afghanistan, and not about atheism, so not cited as a representative of atheists.

I've consolidated these posts here since this is the discussion they are actually part of and removed them from the various other threads.

Great search work Dil!

That's exactly what I was referring to about past references to these guys.

No searching on my part, just a little forum tidying and consolidation.

It was Nick who found these posts and commented on them. I just moved his comments from those disparate threads to here and linked back to the threads he refers to.

I wish dilletante hadn't done what he did to my posts.

Now, onto other matters.

Michael, these posts are posts which I originally quoted;

christopher hitchens was a great atheists who spoke about the abuse of religion. He was also great in my eyes for smartly criticising islam and everything that was wrong with it.

I think we need more people like that in this world. He will be missed

Does the above quote cite Hitchens as a representative of atheists, in your opinion?

And this quote about Bill Maher and Sam Harris;

I personally agree with their position on Islam.
Do you think the above quote cites Maher and Harris as representatives of atheists?

And this one;

If you think none of the above cites celebrity atheists as representatives for atheists, then I'd be grateful if you could provide me of one such example.

Thank you. I have to say that I disagree, and that I can't see any ascription by shekib82 of the posts to representation by the celebrity atheists of atheists in general. But it's differences of opinion that make a forum interesting.

Just saw this posted on line:

You don't need religion to have morals.

If you can't determine right from wrong you lack empathy, not religion.
