Default Frank Gehry is still the worlds worst architect

Quote:
Frank Gehry Is Still the World's Worst Living Architect

While it's been widely known for at least a decade that Frank Gehry is the world's worst living architect, it's not entirely clear why some people—mostly very rich clients—haven't picked up on this yet. The utterly god awful Biomuseo in Panama, an eco-discovery center that cost at least $60 million and took a decade to construct, is only the most recent case in point.

Gehry long ago stopped pursuing any interesting material or tectonic experimentation—and he used to be an interesting architect!—to become the multi-billion dollar equivalent of a Salvador Dalž poster tacked to the wall in a stoned lacrosse player's dorm room, an isn't-it-trippy pile of pseudo-psychedelic bullshit that everyone but billionaire urban developers can see through right away. What's particularly frustrating about Gehry's career is that he's somehow meant to be cool, a kind of sci-fi architect for the Millennial generation, a Timothy Leary of CAD; but he's Guy Fieri, his buildings hair-gelled monsters of advanced spatial douchebaggery.
Read the whole thing... if only for the colorful prose.

I don't agree with the author of the article, Geoff Manaugh. I think the picture in the quote shows an absolute architectural masterpiece.

One's not a bad architect just because there are people who don't like the buildings.

Personally I like some of his work such as the Bilbao Guggenheim, the Dancing House in Prague or the in progress apartment building on the Alexanderplatz in Berlin:

The critique against Gehry is not necessarily that his buildings are ugly (though I would agree that they certainly are).

The primary critique against Gehry is that his buildings are badly designed engineering nightmares that don't function well as buildings qua buildings.

This is hardly his worst work.

His Cleveland building is leaky and doesn't hold snow well though. It also made it much harder to stop this shooter: http://observer.case.edu/peter-b-lew...0-years-later/ .

Incidentally the guy featured in the article, Collopy, was the dad of a childhood friend of mine. I was sleeping over at a mutual friend's house when the shooting took place. It was pretty fucked up, actually.

How much of that is due to the architect and how much to the builder?

I'm sure that there are various technical issues/problems that are unique to each different buiding. But that in itself is a pattern. Most of Gehry's buildings seem to suffer from various physical problems, presumably due to the radical shape/design elements. Certainly it would be likely be a 'builder' problem if it was only one or two of Gehry's buildings having those kinds of problems, but that's just not the case - almost every freakin' building of his has major ongoing issues. That can't be just a coincidence.

Btw, the Gehry designed museum in Ottawa (similar to Bilbao in style) is a horror story for upkeep costs since every element of the building is 100% custom. Even replacing a single custom-built window years after original construction can cost $100,000 each which is insane. It also has notorious leaky roof problems and cracking walls (millions of dollars have been spent trying to fix leaky roof, but it still has problems years later).

That's a fair point. Though at least in the Cleveland case it has a lot to do with the roof angles and corners and such being built to account for snow and its sliding habits.

Those same weird roof angles and corners produce persistent leaky roof problems in Gehry buildings all over the world.

Weird roof angles (and curved walls) seem to be his trademark style.

I thought that some of the modern architecture in Valencia, Spain, was particularly hideous, and Googled it to see if Frank Gehry designed it, but apparently it wasn't him, but a guy named Santiago Calatrava.

The Sidney opera house was kind of a cute, one of a kind thing, but enough is enough, and that was enough contemporary architecture for me.
