Default River cruise

In a month, me and Karina will leave the children with their grandparents (her parents, in Kazan: my parents have too many other grandchildren to watch over), and go on a Volga river cruise.

We will go on the river ship Valeriy Chkalov

It has four decks

Two restaurants, two bars, a music hall, a solarium, etc.

It was built in 1953 in Wismar, Germany

the first in Project 26-37 series of river steamboats ordered by the Soviet government to serve in its river tourism industry. Today owned by "Volga" riverboating firm in Samara.

A truly beautiful ship.

The reception office, at entrance

Then, stars to the next deck and corridor to restaurant

Cashier's Both, where you buy the tickets to the boat (300 rubles/$10 per night)

Higher deck

One panel displays famous Soviet Red Army Airforce ace Valeriy Chkalov, for whom the boat is named

Chkalov worked as a stoker on riverboats for a long time in his youth, something not many people know.

The second panel is about the boat itself

The panels stand at entrance to the hallway to passenger quarters on the deck

At the end of that corridor is the music hall

Back to the central wing

To the open/life-boat deck

As part of the ship's modernisation, there is a screen showing data from Chkalov's new satellite positioning system

so passengers can see where they are always.

Doors to the upper deck restaurant

Further: doors to the deck corridor

Further ahead - the captain's quarters. Then, begins the skylight corridor

Nearby is the radio room and radio operator's quarters

In the old days, people who wanted to send a private radiogramm could pass them throught that window.

Down the stairs

And we are in the back wing of the middle deck

Corridor to the nose

More passenger quarters

Doors to the reading hall

The reading hall also has a small collage about Valeriy Chkalov

More

Third class, cheapest, passenger quarters

(Behind that steel door, is the machine room... my home for 2 years. Here, I must share some information: this is the boat I had worked on after the Navy. That is why I chose it for the cruise. For Karina, it is just a cruise, something to distract her from the pains of pregnancy and other things. For me, it is coming back to a whole part of my life...)

Anyway, the usual passanger quarters key
