Okay, the title of this thread should be self-explanatory.

Here is for making nominations. As soon as we have a short list, I'll post a poll and we can vote on the biggest political jackass of 2009.

I'll go first and nominate RNC Chairman Michael Steele. This guy has been entertaining all year long with endless bullshit. Total amateur hour - this guy seems like a huge embarrassment for the RNC.

I suppose I ought to nominate ex-VP Dick Cheney for being the first member of US executive (to my knowledge) to break with the tradition of not launching partisan attacks against the new occupants of the White House. Dick started on February 1st and hasn't shut up since.

Indeed, VP Cheney has just managed one thing I thought would have been impossible - he makes GW look well mannered and statesman-like.

While "jackass" isn't really the term I'd use, I don't think anyone could be as simultaneously horrifying, embarrassing and laughable as Sarah Palin.

What is the criteria for Jackass?

Joe Lieberman? Maybe for biggest political douchebag.

I'd say that the criteria is wide open. And Joe Lieberman certainly deserves an honored place any any such list, regardless of criteria.

Normally I reserve actually wishing for death of anyone (seriously anyone) to US Supreme court justices, but damn.... I really hope there is a massive movement to have him unseated.

He's toast in 2012 no matter what - if that is any solace. Though, I'm sure he'll choose to retire then rather than face certain loss.

Btw, he lost control of his own "Connecticut for Lieberman" party - it will campaign against him under that label if he runs for re-election.

Since she's nominated, I would like to nominate her followers, the Tea-Baggers. Morons who act like they're political gifts to America are nothing short of jackasses.

President Obama

Beat me to it. I was just going to nominate him for his comments about never campaigning for the public option.

And then there's John McCain for claiming he's ever seen anyone object to unanimous consent for more time to talk in the Senate before, after Franken objected to Lieberman's drivel.

McCain himself objected a few years ago when a Dem was speaking against the Iraq war.

That's a jackass!

I voted Joe Lieberman, not maybe the biggest jackass, but the jackass of consequence.

Same; did not choose Obama as I didn't expect much from him after I had read his book and heard his inauguration speech. He explicitly rejected secularism and 'ideological' liberalism in both.

A jackass definitely, but I'd say that Joe's backstabbing knife was like the coward Brutus' stab of Caesar - merely symbolic since the dead was essentially complete before he arrived.

Joe didn't kill the public option because it was killed by the White House six months ago.

OK Well Silvio Berlusconi isn't there, and he's one of the first Jackasses that comes to my mind ... but if I think about it he might not be the biggest - but he's bigger on my radar than a lot of those on the poll.

Yes, our list is apparently remiss. ;)

Silvio deserves a place of honor there.

Luckily, I can edit polls! :D

Looks like the teabaggers are winning so far!

Not a bad choice I might add... :D

I'm going with Lieberman for the poll but my real selection is SecDef Gates for allowing Gen. McChrystal to leak his analysis of what it would take to fix Afghanistan. The MIC knew McChrystal's 40,000 troop number be a light bulb going on in the dim minds of intervention supporters, vets and other war mongers who consider themselves real Americans. I'd dump Gates back into Texas where he belongs.

Again, blame the tea-baggers for being stupid enough to get sucked into that rhetoric. I remember hearing them say such shit as, "He's a city planner! He can't lead the military!" That's the fucking point, morons!

He's an old boys club ex-CIA director, a MIC member in good standing brought back by baby Bush after being retired to head Texas A&M. Under Gates as SecDef, the CIA now has paramilitary responsibilities. They mission and fly the drones to build yet more hatred against the US. Hopefully, the leaked paper pissed-off Obama enough to replace him.

As far as jackass SecDef types go, I'm willing to cut some slack to this one. Sure he's going to annoy sometimes, but compared to past occupants of the office, he doesn't annoy every fucking day and he does seem to be moderately competent and that's a nice change.

Just remember Rumsfeld or McNamara and I think Gates looks damn fine.

(though, I would much prefered to see Hillary in the oval office and Wesley Clark as SecDef right now)

Unfortunately that's US politics, lesser of the evils.

I'd like to post a honorable mention for Chicago's ex-mayor, Rod Blagojevich. Jackass, extrodinaire. We can add "buffoon" to that description, too.

Illinois's ex-governor was his more notable position.
