My problem with this movie is neither the sex nor the violence, and nor the way in which it switches gears from art cinema to gross-out cinema, but its lack of meaning/content.
As other reviewers have noted everything from the cinematography to the score and of course, the acting, is superb; and even though the 'story' is engaging for the first half-hour or so, it is clear that the director has no intention of passing any sort of comment on the characters' behavior or advancing any 'message'.
If the director intended to provoke us and provide us with grotesque themes to contemplate, then he has achieved his goal. However, if he truly wanted to explore fear or the 'evil' of women, he has failed spectacularly.
He slyly indulges our desire for a catharsis till the very end, until we realize that their is no resolution, no grand commentary, just animal madness.
Chaos reigns alright, though one wishes story did as well.

A sympathetic portrayal of autism, and more importantly, a very poignant story about human relations.
Features the best performances of both Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, with delightful yet appropriate dialogue, excellent pacing, and just enough memorable moments to make you watch it over and over again.
The only flaw would be some of the music, and some unnecessary pauses in the story.
All in all, a movie well worth its run-time.

I have been waging an ongoing and epic battle with the property tax assessing outfit in my county. I have never encountered such a startlingly incompetent organization. They mailed me a bill with a basic math error at one of the steps in the incredibly convoluted property tax calculation process. This basic math error will cost me almost $1000 if nothing is done. Yet, nobody there seems to view this math error as an indication that there is anything wrong with my tax bill. They sound like some low level tech support outfit - if you don't know why there is an error, make something up and hope the person you're talking to is confused enough to leave you alone.

I saw that too (this is part of what I was trying to explain to dozens of different people - my claim was that the first entry was an error, and it was being propagated through for the last entry, though it hadn't for 2007).
I finally talked to a competent person! I had to cajole an employee at another branch into giving me her supervisor's direct number. The supervisor was helpful.
As it turns out, the error is purely in how they display (and convey) the information. That is, the 2007 figure is correct, but the way they say to calculate it is not. It's a long, annoying story, but at the end of the day, my only recourse is at the ballot box. The competent person I talked to was closing up for the day, so we spent a few minutes chatting, and he was explaining how this works and how people in our county get royally hosed by realtors and legislators.
The long and short of it is that property taxes increase so exorbitantly that they implement all of these complex caps and band-aids to artificially lower them. So, the longer you live in your home, the larger the disparity between the tax you actually pay and the tax that you theoretically should have to pay. But... when the homes are listed on the market, what is actually listed for tax payments is what current owner pays. So, if the owner has been there a long time and property taxes are $300 per month, you can assume that yours would be $500 per month or more. But, no one explains this to prospective buyers. The other kicker is that there is effectively a 1-2 year lag on this kicking in because you pay the prior year's taxes in each calendar year.
So, the competent man explained to me, it is not uncommon for young couples in my county to buy a home with a low-ish advertised tax rate from a senior citizen that's lived there a long time, be happy for 2 years, and then go bankrupt because their property taxes shoot up by hundreds of dollars per month out of nowhere. In my case, previous owner bought in 2003, and I can afford the $75 per month increase. I suppose I'm lucky. I've talked to a real estate attorney that wasn't aware of this "gotcha" - it's cleverly buried beneath incompetence and convoluted math for which few have the stomach.
Americano
Nov 12th 2009, 08:39 PM
Sounds like a Chicago deal. Al Capone would be proud.
My county has a 3% annual maximum property tax increase. It can be deferred through disability or senior citizen status at a 6% simple interest rate until the property legally changes hands.
That lien against the property has to be disclosed by the seller prior to escrow closing on a sale. All transactions include funds directed from the seller proceeds side to release the lien.

The critical habit of thought, if usual in society, will pervade all its mores, because it is a way of taking up the problems of life. Men educated in it cannot be stampeded by stump orators ... They are slow to believe. They can hold things as possible or probable in all degrees, without certainty and without pain. They can wait for evidence and weigh evidence, uninfluenced by the emphasis or confidence with which assertions are made on one side or the other. They can resist appeals to their dearest prejudices and all kinds of cajolery. Education in the critical faculty is the only education of which it can be truly said that it makes good citizens.

I've made that argument previously.
Atheism itself isn't fundamentalist, but with people like Dawkins pushing it, it is increasingly becoming so. Most people who are vocal about atheism tend to be quite fundamentalist about it. They can point to other atheists and say "see, nothing fundamentalist about atheism" - but this is only possible by ignoring their own example of aggressive, ideological and fundamentalist atheism.
I will have nothing to do with atheism applied as religious dogma. That is as obnoxious as having an official state religion.

Tzatziki Yogurt Sauce Recipe
Classic Greek Style Condiment with Cucumber, Dill, Garlic and Lemon
Apr 2, 2009 Lynn Smythe
Tzatziki sauce is served as a condiment along with Greek meals. Tsatziki is typically served on top of chicken, lamb and other meat dishes such as gyros.
Tzatziki, sometimes also spelled tsatziki, is a classic Greek condiment made with thick Greek style yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, lemon and lots of fresh dill. Greek style yogurt has the consistency somewhat like a thick sour cream or ricotta cheese. This recipe makes a total of 2 1/2 cups of tzatziki sauce.
In addition to being used as a meat sauce, tzatziki can also be used to make potato salad, and as a dip along with pita bread and fresh vegetables.
Greek Tzatziki Sauce Ingredients
One 16 oz. container Greek style yogurt
1 medium cucumber
3 cloves garlic - grated
2 tablespoons fresh dill - chopped fine
Zest from one lemon
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
2 teaspoons salt
Greek Tzatziki Sauce Directions
Peel the cucumber.
Cut the cucumber in half, and remove the seeds.
Use a hand grater, or food processor, to grate the cucumber
Place the cucumber in a double thickness of paper towel, and gently squeeze out the moisture.
Replace the wet paper towel with dry paper towel, and continue squeezing the cucumber until most of the moisture has been removed.
Add the cucumber to a medium bowl.
Stir in the garlic, dill, lemon zest, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar and salt.
Add the Greek yogurt and stir until well blended.
Cover the tzatziki sauce and place in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

Awesome! I've been wanting to make tzatziki sauce for a while! :)
Can't get any decent "turkish-style" souvlaki around here any more (bloody Greeks have taken over).
If I want it, I have to make it myself.
(Just for fun, try ordering souvlaki on a pita in some greek place - and then complain about the stupid way they roll it up in the pita - which is really messy and hard to eat - instead of the better way of putting it inside the pita!!!)
Be ready to run because they will kill!

I inspired myself to cook a boneless lamb roast tonight. Some sliced garlic, oregano, salt & pepper and olive oil, rolled up, tied, then roasted medium rare. Yum! Tomorrow (actually, later today), I'll put a few slices on some mediterranean flat bread, throw on some sliced sweet onions and tomato then lather on that tzatziki sauce. Difficult for any citizenry being governed by a military-industrial complex to embrace anything but contrived fear disguised as defense. That drives their dependency on mythology and the circle is complete, feeding on itself. It's a very old and common ruling elite formula.

atheism/agnosticism or simple disinterest in religion has been a trend in Australia since at least the seventies, the result of a more pluralistic society combined with a more low key approach to professions of faith than appears to be the case in the US.
in recent years there has been a bit of an increase in religiousity though (of the fundamentalist/evangelical christian variety mainly - and east Asian immigrants are very well represented among this group). at the sam etime I am finding people in their thirties now are more prone to conspiracy and less prone to understanding biology/life sciences than many people in my generation ... even among people who are better educated than the previous generation.
I don't think this reflects changes in the school curriculum or a lack of information - the curriculum if anything is better/more comprehensive, and the array of documentaries on scientific subjects is far better than in the past.

“I still don’t consider myself a political commentator. I’m a pop culture commentator at heart.”
-Glenn Beck
Yes, this is the key to understanding the Republicans and Teabaggers. They are not driven by political theory or ideology at all. For them, life is one big culture war (which is why they are often impervious to rationally based political arguments - the political argument is beside the point and mostly irrelevant - what matters is the emotional reaction to the cultural values on display!).

ok, hold up partner, lets not group all Republicans and all teabaggers into the same category.

I assume you're not a teabagger as you do read and write.

 quite correct. What I meant was that equating Republicans with teabaggers is a mistake.

Do you deny that culture is a primary vote motivator of either group?
That is to say, 'cultural values' trumps ideology every time. The mainstream Republicans as well as Congressional Republicans seem to be very consistent on this point.
Republicans love small government - except for religion, abortion and gays.
That's a clear case of 'culture' trumping ideology. The Republican track record shows zero actual policy support for small government.

I don't know any teabaggers personally so I can't quite say, but yes I do deny that ALL Republicans are motivated by the culture wars. I could except that there is a very loud portion of the party which operates this way, but continuing to say "Republicans and teabaggers" without any kind of qualifier is a kind of ideological statement in itself which ignores the situation the party is in (aka complete and utter chaos). I could say that all Democrats are incompetent at governing a country, but that would be just as broad a generalization based on a small picture of today's circumstances.

I didn't say "all". I said it was a "primary vote motivator", not the only one.
Republican voters do have a very strong track record of voting according to cultural values. There is lots of evidential support for this assertion. Southern working class whites do it quite notably (regularly voting against their own economic interests in the process). Indeed, the healthcare debate provides ample confirmation of this pattern, given that southern working class whites stand to gain the most from healthcare reform - yet they are the bedrock of opposition to the policy - based entirely on 'cultural' arguments (mostly propaganda, but propaganda that feeds into their cultural resentments and fears).

No siree. I saw them live on Wednesday. Great show. I've not been to a lot of concerts, but it was a lot of fun.
