That's freakin' weird given that we've been sub-zero for over a week, with some nasty windchills well into double-digits.

Hahaha! That's about how cold it's predicted to be tonight. And we're having a pleasantly cool winter, too!

I've never experienced sub-zero temperatures. Well, OK, I have, but it was in the giant freezer at work, and I didn't have a coat, and I didn't mind too much because it meant I didn't have to be serving greasy pizzas to overweight douche-holes at that exact moment.

Yes, Florida is warmer than Buffalo, but December is not normally a 'hot' month in Florida! People go to Florida to escape winter - not to get suntans. Nice golf weather, not suntanning weather.

If you want a suntan and beaches, best to go to Mexico or one of the Carribean islands.

It's been snowing off and on for about a week but yesterday and today required that I use the snowblower today. I don't usually have to because the snowfalls are small enough to shovel through the effectively. However, the temperature was actually above freezing but those giant flakes just kept falling out of the sky. The boy thought it was the most amazing thing he's ever seen I think. He couldn't tell us that but judging by his quasi-language and emotional reactions, I think he'll be spending winters outdoors like I did growing up.

Sounds like he'll be the one wielding the snow-blower next year.

BTW, just enough snow to keep things annoying. Salt takes too long to work and scraping only makes it slick. Grr.

Apparently, salt is very specialized and only works well at particular temperatures. Applied correctly, it is the best stuff to drive on in winter, but it rots the hell out of vehicles and destroys road surfaces. All our major highways have to be resurfaced pretty much every year because of it.

Sand on the other hand is nowhere near as effective as salt, but it does work. Unfortunately, it tends to make everything really ugly (snow turns into brown muddy snow) and tends to get tracked inside everywhere.

60° here. In Oregon in January! Rain, but I like periodic, moderate rain.

Americano
Jan 16th 2011, 09:28 PM
The rain is no longer periodic. Two days and nights of it at coastal to mountain altitudes (melts snow) with another 24 hours ahead has created flood conditions.

I moved some outdoor furniture up two levels (4') from where they were (trees in the river) which is now under fast flowing water. Still well below the previous high water mark from 1978.

Exciting! I like changing weather conditions.

Speaking of which...

It is colder than the proverbial 'witch's tit' out there today!

Yesterday it snowed almost all day (very lovely it was). This morning, we had a bit of a mystery here. Apparently, we have evidence of what appears to be 'snowball-like marks' on the balcony (in addition to a fine layer of new fallen snow).

Seems mysterious given our local altitude here (about 230' off the ground) and the paucity of other high-rise buildings nearby from which one could actually throw a snowball from.

And of course, I called the 'evidence' snowball-like, but it isn't precisely snowball-like evidence to conclude it specifically was a snowball (no marks on the walls for a 'hit', rather the snowballs appear to have landed on the 'floor' of the balcony (on top of the new fallen snow, leaving a track). And the 'snowballs' are rather small and 'chunky' looking, not like actual snowballs. It could have been something else (who the heck knows?).

Anyway, just some amusing to speculate upon! ;)

Heh heh. Well, I can honestly say it's probably not that odd to expect Jesus in Narnia.

I really want to do the St. George's Day Feast here (http://www.camlann.org/) for my birthday. I'm too weird to function, I know.

And speaking of Medieval things (in the weather thread, I know), but did you know that chickens were once used to cure the plague? You'd take a chicken, put it's anus on a bubo and pumped its beak until it died (which totally meant it had done its job sucking out the badness in the bubo). Have I already told that story? It's a fave!

Interesting little tourist trap there. :D

Btw, for us hard-core history buffs, the 14th century has more in common with the birth of modernism than it does as a symbol of medieval era.

Indeed, most serious medieval historians suggest the medieval era ended in the 13th century. Pretty everything that is modern begins in the 14th century (including bankers going bankrupt). Clothing fashion styles also appear to originate in the 14th century (in northern Italy, stripes and counter-colored stripes became particularly fashionable at that time - in northern Europe 'elf-shoes' were all the rage). This trend for 'fashion' pretty much begins in the 14th century - very strong symbol of modernism that is.

The 14th century also saw the rise of a money-economy to replace the tradtional cash-less feudal economy, feudalism was dead (Edward's campaign in Wales was entirely fought with paid-soldiers). And a rapid population rise from massive crop surpluses in the 14th century is extremely uncharacteristic of medieval period where populations were mostly stable.

And the mounted armored horseman (aka knights) that are one of the defining characteristics of medieval era were soundly defeated in several major battles at the end of the 13th and beginning of the 14th century, heralding the end of that military era and the beginning of a new era in warfare - a very modern development that foretold the rise of regular armies (just another of the seemingly endless historical shifts of advantage between the principles of infantry and cavalry).

I won't even mention the inflation or the fast rising wages for peasants that are also characteristic of the 14th century after the plague (which was also very un-medieval-like given that the plague traveled on long-distance trade ships).

But, most people don't know all this stuff. :D

Seems like the second wave is hitting now - lots of blowing snow right now - just in time for afternoon rush hour! (which is a weird name for something that moves slower than usual - and way worse on days like this!)

At least I've been off work this week. By the look of the streets out my window, it seems like quite a few people stayed home today - at 5pm downtown streets are normally heavy traffic, yet the streets are half-empty right now - like a Sunday.

Never tried it living in a city on a public street, but here's a thought for the next one:

If parking outdoors in winter weather with severe snow/ice on the way I suggest securing one of those disposable blue tarps over the windshield/wipers. Run the defroster until it does its job and go from there. Worked well in Idaho Panhandle serious winters.

My windshield wipers are under literally inches of snow. No hope for them until it thaws.

Around here, when winter storms are expected and cars are parked outside, one often sees windshield wipers put into the 'up' position. After the storm, one sees all kinds of white blobs with windshield wipers sticking out like antennas!

This prevents the wipers from becoming 'one' with the windshield, caked in ice.

It is a 'new' phenomena around here. If you see one car in a parking lot doing it, next time, there will be dozens in that same parking lot. The next time after that, pretty much all of the cars in that lot will do it.

Now one sees it on side-street parking too. Definitely one of those 'crowd-sourced' solutions. :)

Times and people change. The money in CA used to be almost as attractive as NYC levels with a different lifestyle but other than N. CA's Silicon Valley that's no longer the case. If I was beginning a career or considering a career move in this economic climate I'd have to determine where the opportunities are and then look at climate.

I was raised in high humidity summers with vicious winters, spent a few career years in it and eventually decided that wasn't the way I wanted to live my life. Five years in Hawaii was rewarding and fun but I discovered my preference was three or four distinct, mild seasons with at one time blue water sailing and downhill skiing within easy access.

Certainly not always, but enough to make playing golf on world class courses interesting challenges among some of California's most beautiful coastal scenery. Living in Oregon I obviously prefer that kind of weather.

If pleasant, year around weather is one's criterion for residence, Hawaii's the only geographical part of the US offering it. Weather aside, Hawaii's not for everyone due to Hawaii's ethnic diversity and associated cultures.

From what I was told by a shrink I knew for a few years on a personal basis, it's not an uncommon affliction. Many people have it to lesser degrees without even being aware of their imbalance until faced with societal pressures. A competent mental health professional closely following your emotional life on a regular basis is your best option.

We'll miss him.

Well, so long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.

Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

No way to recall
What it was that you had said to me,
Like I care at all.

So loud.
You sure could yell.
You took a stand on every little thing
And so loud.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cause I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

Hey, you! Breathing?
Would you die for me?
Don't you fuckin lie.
Don't you step out of line.
Don't you fuckin lie.

You've claimed all this time that you would die for me.
Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

You had alot to say.
You had alot of nothing to say.
Come down.

Get off your fuckin cross.
We need the fuckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies. [sic]

Yeah, that's what I'd be expecting - it was a really dry winter for us (wet in the mountains) but has made up for it this spring, so I'd expect some good green - like the neighbor across the street. Oh, I wish. But, we're in a covenant controlled community, so I don't have the power to do anything that I want. I'm going to try to take up some of the lawn in the back yard and cut down the aspens (God, why do people plant aspens down here?) to put in veggies, but we're waiting for approval still.

If aspens have been shedding you're going to need some serious soil amending. Raised beds?

Beautiful right now but awaiting some bad storms. The northern and western part of the state are under tornado warnings. I'm crossing my fingers the bad weather holds off until I'm off the clock. I'm not looking forward to dragging all the residents out of their rooms or beds to get in the hallway on C wing.

"Bill! We need to get in the hallway."

Yes it is the safest wing.

Funny enough the building was hit by a tornado while being built. C wing was the one that got hit.

Still clear and the sun is setting in the horizon.

I was here one afternoon when we had to take everyone to C wing. Some were roaming around on their scooters being nosey, some wouldn't sit with the rest of the group because they feel they're too good for the "bad" and "sickly" ones...of course there are some Alzheimer's patients. It is kinda like a room full of kids calming and chasing them down. "Bill" likes to bitch, moan, and complain about things so that is always fun too.

By the way I am HIGHLY efficient while at work. I don't fuck around so if an actual tornado came through I wouldn't argue I would just pick them up and go. I'm pretty damn strong and add the adrenaline in a situation like that there wouldn't be much room for delay

Yeah, that's the goal. Once I cut those tall leafy weeds down (they're sick, so they've got to go either way) I plan on digging out the grass and doing about an 6" raised bed with fresh topsoil that I'll break into the clay beneath slowly over the next couple of years. A couple of new trees - thinking peach ATM - will help to break some of it up, too.

It's going to be a huge amount of work either way, but CO soil is ridiculously bad clay anyway, so no matter what I was going to do it would be work. I'd managed to get the soil in my last garden going pretty well, so I figure in 10 years, I'll have this one going, too.

The first day of the three-day holiday here brought mid-50s temps, 25mph winds, rain, thunder, lightening and periodic marble sized hail. mid-low 30s tonight. Great weather to be inside looking out at it but.....

This area is noted for its outdoors activity including boating, camping, fishing, hiking and river rafting, attracting turn-away crowds at local, state and federal parks. Supposed to be a chance of cloudy sunshine on Monday.

I wish those crowded into tents, travel trailers, RVs and such, many with adrenalin charged children, the very best as I turn the thermostat up a few degrees while I get an ice cold beer.
