I don't know how many of y'all are on teh face pages, but you may be familiar with the "applications" that you can add to sex up your profile a little bit. I generally avoid them with a couple of exceptions, but now I want to make one.

It started mostly as a joke between a friend and I, but now I would actually like to make a very simple one. Here's where I get confused. They say you need to have your own server. Now I understand that, facebook doesn't want to host every random ass thing that somebody might come up with. However, I am absolutely incredulous that every single one of these people has a server in the way that I understand it: I mean, there are purely moronic "What Twilight Character are you" with tons of spelling mistakes, etc. If some random tween can make one, why can't I?

Does anyone know how this sort of hosting thing generally works, or any way that I might circumvent the fact that my house doesn't include a dedicated server?

Basically the application must actually 'sit' on a drive somewhere and to work on the internet, that somewhere must be a server that is available to the net 7/24 so it can be linked to.

Some ISP's do offer some limited hosting service with your account (5 Mb or something like that). There are also places on the net that do offer 'free hosting' but I couldn't recommend using them at all.

Most net servers are not actually at people's houses. The server that we use here to drive this forum is part of a very large server-farm.

I remember long ago using one of those 'free' hosting sites for my first website. It was difficult to find my content in the banner ads before pop-ups made the scene.

I use GoDaddy to host my personal website, very reasonable but my traffic is minimal.

Depending on your timeframe (I have 20 projects going in addition to work and school), I could host it for you. One of these days I plan on getting around to exposing one of my computers at home to the 'net.

I'm putting together (very slowly) a site that I call "Cynics' Corner". When I get it to a state where I like it and have it offer perhaps some form of interactive content, I'll probably either get a static IP from my ISP or else trick my ISP into thinking I have one. At that time, I'd have no qualms about hosting a facebook app, with the caveat that I'd shut it down and help you find a better host if the thing went viral.

But, if you're looking to do this imminently, I'm not your man... :wip:
