View Full Version : All-Time Worst Sit-Coms

Okay, this thread should be fun! :D

Please suggest what you consider to be the most annoying, stupid, unfunny or just plain moronic 'sit-com'.

I'll start things off with two suggestions: Night Court and Everyone Loves Raymond. If I had to choose, the second is far worse than the first, though that's just a matter of opinion.

Both have moronic-stupid plots and storylines, lame jokes, really bad acting and both try to have 'moral of the story' plotlines. Utterly pathetic.

(I promise to try to refrain from nominating Seinfeld - it certainly deserves to be here, but I understand that opinion upsets lots of people)

The episodes of Everybody Loves Raymond that I saw were hard to take because all of the characters were really pathetic and annoying (except Raymond's father who I sometimes thought was alright). You had a spineless, whiny mama's boy married to a shrill harpy, and things just progressed from there. All of the "comedy" was based around cariactatures of these pathetic personality types (which really sort of means that it isn't situation comedy). There was absolutely no one in that show who, if they were a family member of mine, I wouldn't refuse to talk to or associate with indefinitely.

Hmm. I don't know. I don't watch many sitcoms. I don't watch much network TV, truthfully. When I have, a minute or so of any sitcom will be enough of an indicator to tell me whether or not I'll continue watching. I don't watch any at the moment and, honestly, I can't remember any I've watched in the past few years. Are there any people consider good?

I used to watch Mash and All in the Family. I do watch House, occassionally, but I'm not sure one would classify that show as a sitcom.

Night Court - To be honest, I remember little of the show. I would love to jump to it's defense because I remember laughing a lot as a kid, but I really don't remember enough. The most important thing I remember is how eccentric all the characters were, which is something I enjoy.

Everyone Loves Raymond - The creators of that show will burn in hell. Oddly, though, I've watched many episodes. The father is amusing, but the other characters tend to eat at one's patience. If any of these characters were in my family, there would be regular fist fights at family get-togethers.

Seinfeld - A show that deserves defense. Seinfeld may have many "stupid" plots and silly characters, but they still strike at human nature, which is, essentially, the point of the show. We are petty, often silly creatures and the idiotic things we get upset over are amusing when viewed objectively. That's what makes this show a success to me.

I'll suggest another....

Friends - Because I have friends of my own and they are much funnier and deep than this lot of idiots. This show wanted to be a soap opera, but ended up being the most mindless show since Saved By The Bell. It's one of those shows where you can sit through an entire episode without laughing once or caring about the characters and how they have managed to create their banal situations.

The George Lopez Show and that show made by Tyler Perry.

I've never been able to see what made Friend's so popular for so long. I don't know if I'd rank it as an "all-time worst" but I'm utterly baffled by how it survived.

My wife and I watch most of our shows via DVD from Netflix, and we're always on the look out for shows which ran for a long time. I'd seen a few episodes of Friend's before and while I never got into it I thought 'Hey, it ran for more than a decade. We should at least give it a shot.' So we got a couple DVD's and watched them episode by episode and it was intensely boring and insipid. Without exception, the best part of every episode was the opening montage. Very curious.

Similarly, I've always been amazed that Cheers survived as long as it did. We watched 5 and 1/2 seasons of that one and were always thinking "This ran for 11 seasons, it has to get better eventually, right?" But it never did, not even when Dianne finally left, though that was a move in the right direction. On the upside, it did create the spin-off 'Fraiser', which is easily in my top 10 shows of all time list.

Intriguingly, Cheers also had a remarkably good opening montage. Maybe that's all one really needs to last a decade as a sitcom...

I didn't realize that this was meant to be a comedy show!

I thought it was just a lame soap opera for the teen set. Definitely a bore.

I saw a few episodes of Friends. I didn't get it. Although there was one episode where the blonde girl was singing about a smelly cat that I found fairly amusing.

Smelly cat, smelly cat. What are they feeding you? :ummm:

I never watched the show, but I had to listen to all my friends in middle school sing it. I hated the show before I even got around to watching it

Come on now, there must be hundreds of really bad sit-coms out there.

How about Brady Bunch? That's another one of those "Friends" like sit-coms that come across entirely as lame soap operas for the teen set.

Or how about Three's Company? That show is a legend in its own time for moronic stupidity and really bad acting.

Or how about The Facts of Life? I've seen that one on the Christian Network when I'm channel flipping. It is really hokey. There's another show on the same network from a similar late 1980s period (I can tell by the hair cuts and clothing styles) I think it is called Full House. That one's really corny.

Oh, I didn't think about all of the old ones from times past.

I remember a show about a little girl that was a robot, but the name escapes me. There were also that one with Gary Coleman...

It was called Small Wonder - horrible show! Why did you have to remind me about it!!!

Just for that I'll introduce some of the worst fromage from my youth back into our collective memory here:

Silver Spoons
Mr. Belvedere
Gimme a Break
The Hogan Family

I've never heard of any of these shows! (I'm blissful in my ignorance).

How about Fresh Prince of Belair... that's another ugly 80s sitcom.

What is it about the 80s that they produced so many bad sitcoms?

Republican meant family values back then and that's what the networks were out to connect with. Remember TGIF? Speaking of which, that hosted probably the worst sitcom of all time....

Family Matters, otherwise known as "Steve Urkel." Just picturing that little shit in those goddamned suspenders makes me want to go on a smashing rampage.

Oh Lord. Full House. That is without a doubt the worst sitcom ever made.

How 'bout the one where there's a family consisting of a bumbling, screw-up comic relief husband, who's always getting bailed out by his bitchy, self-righteous and disproportionately attractive wife, and two to five children who deal with varying social problems. Every episode there is a conflict with moments of humor approved by a laugh track, but the conflict gets resolved in a half hour.

Oh. That's all of them.
