I may be a geek but I'm really excited about the new Star Trek movie. It's directed by one of the creators of Lost and Fringe which are two of my favorite programs. So far critics are saying really good things about it.

I've never seen a Star Trek movie in my life, nor have I ever watched any of the tv series. Yet, I kind of want to see this new movie. I saw the trailer for it a while back and thought it might be good, and then I saw JJ Abrams is directing it. As a big fan of Lost, that's a plus. I might have to check it out when it releases.

I think the original series had some great episodes for the time and some awful ones. I really do like The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine along with about four of the ten movies. My favorite part about start trek is it's humanist outlook on things and that it doesn't portray technology as being this evil thing that will destroy us like much of the science fiction world does.

I'm excited. And I think not seeing Star Trek before would be a plus. It's hard for me to get behind unnecessary changes and I know there are going to be some. For instance, they're ruining the G.I. Joe movie by putting the guys in these big power suits. Grr.

I wish they had done a generation past The Next Generation actually. One thing that was neat about both TNG and the original series was seeing new technology the writers thought of.

I can't wait! I wouldn't see it if it didn't have Leonard Nimoy, but I figure since he's given his approval I can be officially stoked. I'm definitely a TOS fan.
It does upset me, though, that Spock has a girlfriend in this movie. Like, doesn't that just throw Amok Time out the window? What happened to Pon Farr?
(see, I can say that with a straight face because I'll never actually have to meet you people and am spared the embarrassment of that statement)

Maybe they will just be presented as companions. Spock's father had a human wife and they where together not only in TOS but also on Star Trek IV at the very beginning.
And why should Star Trek fans feel embarrassed yet Star Wars fans get a free pass?

True, true. I guess I'm a little uneasy with the idea of bringing out Spock's human side because, truthfully, I have a huge crush on him and his logic (he is both my desktop background and my phone wallpaper). I don't want that downplayed!
And Star Wars fans should be embarrassed! Them and their Jar Jar Binks, despicable!
OK, Juuust kidding. (but seriously, though. Ruin a story much?)

I actually thought Episode III was worth enduring one and two.
But yeah spock is awesome. This used to be my avatar.

lol.
I can't lie, though, he didn't bug me nearly as much as the ending of Ep. III (and he bugged me a lot).
I mean, You don't have to saber his head off or anything Obi, but do something! You've got pure evil crawling back out of some freaking lava. Just, kick him back in or something and then spend the rest of your uneventful life telling yourself that you "didn't actually kill him. Instead it was more of a... diving lesson".

"Mercy." That was some cold shit. Just leave a dude fucked up like that.
I'm one of the few Star Wars fans that actually thinks the original trilogy should be remade. What Lucas did with the remasters was atrocious and he deserves to have the rights torn away from him for that. Add to those charges JarJar, the "Droid factory" scene from II, and Ewok movies and you've got a hell of a case.

Hopefully you are unique.
The original three Star Wars films are classic, hilariously funny and quite cheesy - indeed, they are almost 'camp' - and massively popular because of it!
The newer Star Wars movies are absurd - they take a bubble-gum story and pretend its something mystical or literary - ending up with something that is totally overblown, pompus and boring (rather like George Lucas himself I might add).

I have always loved Star Trek and its descendants. Anthropology in space - who could ask for anything more?

I've always been surprised conservatives don't attack Star Trek. I mean you basically have a Humanist Utopian society, without money in what can only be described as a communist economy, going around preaching humanism and fighting or at least resisting the forces of objectivism, nationalism, and religious extremism. The show is pretty much a liberal propaganda piece.

I've always found that odd but my girlfriend from high school is now a die hard Rush listening conservative and so is her father and they both love Star Trek. I think they compartmentalize.
But yeah it is constantly talking about tolerance and they brag that humans at that time no longer consider personal gain to be their goal but instead self improvement and that they worked together to eliminate war, poverty, and disease. Especially The Next Generation.

HOLY poop! That did NOT disappoint.
I have one objection (and it's kind of a biggie). Scuse me, but if I wasn't allowed to date the cute guy in recieving when I worked at Target then I'm damn sure that relationship wasn't kosher at all, Mr. Spock. No no! I'm betting Starfleet has some explicit regulations against that sort of thing.

I wish I could just go see it. My mother-in-law is supposed to keep the kids this weekend but by the time we get them there and back it will be to late to really go see it today. We are definitely going tomorrow night though.

Entertainment, like politics, religion, housekeeping, work, sports and hobbies is quite often the of subject passionate or obsessive behavior from devoted fans. This strikes me as relatively 'normal' behavior, given its frequency and commonality with 'love' (or sex).

Agreed. In this example my opinion is based on a general disdain for team spectator sports. To me it's similar to the guy at the beer bar in his team's jersey with his favorite performer's number screaming at the big screen game.

But, to me, not nearly as exciting as being a participant while downhill skiing on deep powder snow at night with a full moon, blue water sailing on a long reach with a steady wind and spinnaker flying or 150mph with the top down on a nice day in a performance vehicle. To each his own.

I saw it and I really enjoyed it. It's interesting the way they allowed for changes that go against established canon rather than just simply ignoring it. I'm really glad J.J. Abrams did a good job with it and left it open for the possibility to have sequels. I hope he stays on to direct them and keeps the same team for them.

Seems to be getting mixed US reviews while a smash hit in the UK. They're after the under 25 crowd as evidenced by the release of a new wave of toys while attempting to pacify fans of the older generation.

Actually I haven't seen any bad reviews hardly. Metacritic which gives a weighted average of film critics has it at 84 which is very high for a summer blockbuster type movie.

OK, but Pon Farr objections aside, does anyone else feel that shtupping a lead character does NOT constitute a backstory? I mean, they could have done anything with Uhura (like, maybe she could have been a porn star or something... just sayin'), but they just went and added a relationship that just doesn't fit into any timeline (alternate or not).
And also, touching as the first twenty minutes were, why on Earth is there a pregnant lady on a star ship?
(I figured it was ok to rant now that a lot of people have seen it)

I know on other Star Trek shows whole families would be together on them.

"I'm sorry ma'am, but we're going to have to shoot you off into the vacuum of space"
"why?!?"
"well, you were the wife of a red shirt. Ensign Bob, your husband, was vaporized this morning. It's just right for all of us if, well, you follow suit"
You're right. I take it back. I like this scenario.
