What made me think of Dragonforce was that I was wondering who is considered the fastest guitar player of all time and Guitar World did a list of the 50 fastest although it didn't rank them. I was surprised to find out neither guitar player from Slayer was put on the list.

You know, I quit looking at lists because of the AVClub and their fucking retarded "16 Movies We Can Hardly Relate to Each Other" shit. Take your "Fastest Guitarist" list for example....in reality, you have probably only heard 10 to 15 of the real Fastest, so why even fuck with a list? So they can name drop people who don't belong on the list and sell more ads to their labels. Lists are silly.

Granted. The only way I like a list is when it is listing things I'm not familiar with but interested in. For instance, the last list on AVClub I liked was a list of intrumentals by famous bands. I got a lot of good songs on a couple burned CDs now because of it.

The only thing I ever try out that I see on AVClub is when I see a really good music review and like the song they post. Other than that I read about things I'm familiar with. I loved their article on Superman IV the other day. They are at their best when they talk about something that is awful.

As for the 'not available' message, that's probably some copyright shit between Europe and North America. I'm seeing more and more of that. Of course, YouTube links you post are always "Be" YouTube. And the links I post are "Ca" YouTube (by default). Just like Google.
We should try using "YouTube.com" links and see what happens.

I have three favorite Led Zeppelin songs and a hard time choosing among them. Kashmir is one, with Going to California and Tangerine (with an obscure instrumental called Black Mountainside ranking close behind)
Interestingly, I really like their sound and the hard rocks stuff in general. I think it's more coincidence than anything that my favorites are more acoustic-y songs.
There was a time when I could play pretty much any Zeppelin song on guitar and do a good job of it (sigh). I think I can still get through Stairway, Tangerine, and Over the Hills and Far Away, but the rest of them have slipped through the cracks and would require some practice.

Don't worry about that. Do you see me posting anything in this thread? :D
Music doesn't interest me at all and I'm hard pressed to imagine any playlist that sounds "smart". ;)
Indeed, music is entirely emotional in its effects and thus anti-intellectual to begin with (it seeks to convey a message using emotive response, not reasoned thought). Without the emotional investment, all music comes across as just a jumble of sounds that are either pleasant sounding or not (and that is always entirely subjective).

I agree and that is why I absolutely love music. Sometimes it doesn't have to make sense and to me that is part of the beauty. (We, as humans don't always make sense either!) But there is always some song or artist to fit the mood I am in, or to take me on a trip down memory lane. :)

And if I hear just one more idiot on the radio opining about how "we all remember exactly what we were doing that day when we heard the news" I'm going to choke.
I'm getting sick of this formula repeated by rote. It is pure bullshit. I haven't a clue where I was or what I was doing on 9/11 when I first heard that news. I also have no clue where I was when I heard that John Lennon was shot. I also have no clue where I was when Marc Lepine shot 27 women at some university in Montreal either (some ten or fifteen years ago).
But I've been told at least a dozen times in the last three weeks that "everyone" remembers where they were when these events occured. I say bullshit - I don't even remember the dates these events occured (or what year it was). 9/11 I remember was 2001, but I'm betting that this factoid will also become quite fuzzy in a few years.

I remember being woken up on 9/11. I was sleeping in before class. I'm too young for most of those events but I also remember finding out Dessert Storm started while at a Harlem Globetrotters game. For me it's memorable because of the sudden surprise and worry that came with it. But yeah it is talked about way too much. It's significant to me personally but I really don't care about what other people where doing when they found out.
Michael
Dec 8th 2009, 02:30 PM
I guess the point that gets me here is that a tragic event that might be EXTREMELY significant to you isn't all that significant to me.
It annoys me the way so many people just assume that what is significant to themselves is just as significant to everyone.
(I'm primarily ranting against idiots on radio and tv here - they seem the most guilty of this game).

I use last.fm a lot, which plays songs related to a genre or band of your choice. Plant, Page and Jones all have solo stuff that cycles through the Led Zeppelin channel on that. Jones is pretty and nice, but Plant always had a sort of trippy globe-trotter feel to it. Slow and laid back and nothing at all like Zeppelin.
And I'm jealous they were your first concert. Mine was Vince Gill when I was 12 or so. I only made up for it about seven years ago when I saw The Legendary Shack Shakers live.

Among the british Bands I saw were Deep Purple - but probably most was stuff you've never heard of.You'd be surprised. I'm a big fan of older stuff, particularly good British blues. I love the blues they based their style on, but they give that extra "dirty" feel that just resonates in me. Deep Purple is a very underrated band and I'm jealous of that show too!
I used to have all Zeppelin's albums - I was the first kid on the block to get the Hermit (the one with Stairway to Heaven) and also Houses of the Holies ... but after that I think I started listening to other stuff.
Their first four albums were simply I through IV with IV being the "Hermit" you're talking about. I think their best stuff are those first five albums (I-IV and Houses of the Holy), but I still love a lot of their later work.
I also have a belief about Zeppelin that most fans agree on: Zeppelin is like sex in that it's great when listening to the plain ol' vanilla album tracks, but the variety and intimacy of a live performance makes it so much more intense.

LOL - there were a few others ... but its over thirty years ago - I remember being disappointed in the Stones ... loved Status Quo, the Kinks, and there were a couple whose names I can't remember - I saw ACDC in a local pub before they made it big.... its after Midnight here ... I will have to rack my brains and think about this! later there was the Pretenders.

I think for me the first five are what I think of as Zeppelin - you are right - it was I - IV - but for some reason when it first came out people did refer to that album as "the hermit" I remember that, don't know why or even where that came from.
I also have a belief about Zeppelin that most fans agree on: Zeppelin is like sex in that it's great when listening to the plain ol' vanilla album tracks, but the variety and intimacy of a live performance makes it so much more intense.

Sometimes, when I'm in a holiday crowd, I clutch my purse and/or wallet tightly and imagine the indignation I'd feel if someone tried to nick it. Then I imagine the indignation of the thief a few hours later when he or she realized that they've stolen nothing more than a sack of fast food receipts.

I live in the sticks and the Wal-Mart serves a rural crowd. Once a week the local paper's police activity report carries a 'woman loses purse to thief' report. The most common method is women moving grocery market shopping from the cart into their vehicle with their purse still in the cart fold-out where the kid used to sit. Sadly, the naive victims probably consider themselves informed voters rather than political prey.

I view it as a large portion of the general public having a voracious appetite with fool-proof digestive system for virtually anything specifically labeled entertainment. With entities vying for their audience to service them.
The producer who won that bet had to experience immense professional satisfaction in his knowledge of audience demographics that maintains his Bel Air mansion and Beverly Hills lifestyle.

trends in popular culture can be very interesting.
i am often curious about how it all works. what is determined as worthy (to watch, listen to, wear) is subject to what exactly?
I was watching someting last night on music and the brain, and clearly what we are used to, what we listen to when we are young can shape our musical tastes to a great extent, but there are other factors as well. I think a lot of what is popular is determined by what other people thinkis cool - so in some contexts, saying - I don't like that - is akin to saying - the emporer is wearing no clothes.
obviously - how cool you are perceived to be will determine whether your musical opinion is valued by your peers or not.
but why are some things popular in the first place?

With teens it is apparently the other way around (though they never admit as such). That is to say, how cool you are perceived to be is determined by whether or not you subscribe to the 'approved' music of your peers.
Indeed, teens have a bizarre habit of expressing their independence by trying to be identical to their peer group.

Hate to say it but humans are a social animal and as any zoologist can tell you, social animals have pecking orders.

but the pecking order can manifest differently - i guess. rather than bullying others into following the line, a person who is regarded as a trendsetter is seen as having particularly admirable qualities that others try to emulate - and they will be followed, regardless of whether their taste is trash or otherwise ...
and I guess how popular they are determines how much, and how quickly the trend will spread.

I can't bear listening to "contemplative" music/"progressive rock" like that in the Dark Side of the Moon; give me a beat, meaningful lyrics, and a reasonable length, not your 'creative" project. In this regard, my approach to music is completely different from my approach to movies, as I only listen to music if I have nothing better to do and for relaxation.
