I was pretty shocked to see this going on the other morning.

Amazing how dim-witted some people are. The bigger question I have is how can the president not be informed about something like this. I understand that 99.9% of all military operations are going to go unreported to a level of specificity such as would be required to convey the significance of this maneuver. But, come on! It's HIS fucking jet! I'd imagine that his golf cart or his wardrobe are on a tighter leash than this. Somebody is going to lose their job over this I'd think.

This is insane. Some idiot obviously thought it would be cool to have some stock photos of Air Force one with the Statue of Liberty in the background.
Obviously someone wasn't thinking this through...
That being said, I can well imagine that Obama might not have known about this event prior to it occuring. The President doesn't "own" his own aircraft - they belong to the US Air Force (as far as I know).

The first time I read about this I was genuinely thinking it was an Onion thing. It's weird no matter how one looks at it. Possibly some high ranking military guy that wanted Obama to look bad ? Just a guess.

Sounds probable. Anyone else would have chosen Photoshop.

The fellow responsible (White House Military Liason office) has taken the full blame for this and resigned on Friday (news reported it today).
Apparently, Obama had nothing to do with the event in question and didn't know of it until it occured.

Another big difference between this admin and the last. Previously, people who fucked up, stayed on.....and even got the medal of honor.

There's nothing wrong with the photo op.
They just decided not to tell the people of NYC and NJ that it was going to happen. Really stupid decision. And the idea behind not telling them? I have no idea. I'd like to know the answer to that one!

I think it was just a reasonable and common thing to do the shot (US military does this stuff all the time). But no one actually considered the 9/11 reminder angle - which is the 'political fail' here.
