Well, another fiscal year comes to a close. Computations show that for every $8 dollars my wife and I made this year, $1 goes to the government (~12.5%). I'm feeling somewhat bitter as I write out this check and was curious what % others here were shelling out this year.

Approximately 42%. And I'll gladly pay a bit more if need be.
And oh, nothing goes to the government, except, of course, wages and expenditures directly related to government business. It goes to the state.

I did my taxes a while back, but I think that (not counting sales tax) I was around 30% before homeowner's interest and education deduction kicked in, and something like 25% after that. I can't really figger it with sales tax, off the top of my head. Given that I sin and pay the according taxes for it, it would probably be in the 35-40% range.
And, unlike SMadsen, I pay none of it gladly.

For me saying if I pay it gladly or not doesn't really apply. Some things the government does I would rather not pay for but other things I don't mind. I haven't figured up exactly what we paid since our accountant just got it done at the last minute but I know we are getting a bigger rebate than last year which is a surprise.

Oh, it's with sales taxes? Then put 25% of the remaining 58% on top. The 42% is only income tax.

I pay zero, naught, nada
But if I were a normal Belgian I'd almost beat SMadsen. Unless I were philty rich of course, when it would once again become 0%.
Belgium is both a tax fraud and a tax evasion paradise. Unless you're an average worker or employee. Those pay the bills here.
As for potential willingness and appreciation or not, that ranges from 0% to over 100%. For instance, education couldn't get enough -lest it be applied reasonably- while the 2.5 billion € for the army is almost a total waste. And the immense intrest on national debt which was caused by 2 (two) people is beyond contempt. *
* I looked it up; 25% of the federal budget still goes to interest on national debt. That's what happens if 20 years ago the national debt was 130% of the GDP. Please take note, Mr. Obama.

I think the general notion is that beating in terms of taxes is to pay less. So you've certainly beaten everyone in this thread so far :)
Btw, I didn't think you were still a fan of Thoreau :)

If less is more, I'd beat anyone in the level of income category too. So that evens out.

Not really, minimal interaction with the State is a must for any faction in that particular line of thinking.

About 30-32% including property taxes, but not sales or sin taxes.
