Now, as the only Bush Cabinet member to remain under President Obama, Gates is preparing the most far-reaching changes in the Pentagon's weapons portfolio since the end of the Cold War, according to aides.

Two defense officials who were not authorized to speak publicly said Gates will announce up to a half-dozen major weapons cancellations later this month. Candidates include a new Navy destroyer, the Air Force's F-22 fighter jet, and Army ground-combat vehicles, the offi cials said.

More cuts are planned for later this year after a review that could lead to reductions in programs such as aircraft carriers and nuclear arms, the officials said.

As a former CIA director with strong Republican credentials, Gates is prepared to use his credibility to help Obama overcome the expected outcry from conservatives. And after a lifetime in the national security arena, working in eight administrations, the 65-year-old Gates is also ready to counter the defense companies and throngs of retired generals and other lobbyists who are gearing up to protect their pet projects.

"He has earned a great deal of credibility over the past two years, both inside and outside the Pentagon, and now he is prepared to use it to lead the department in a new direction and bring about the changes he believes are necessary to protect the nation's security," said Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary.

Well this certainly looks ambitious. It is probably worthwhile to keep in mind that such plans have been announced before and came to naught. We can expect the MIC to fight tooth and nail against any reductions.

Should be interesting to see how far this gets...

Thank God. I wish him luck. The amount we spend on guns (and stuff) is insane.

As everyone already knows, the US spends more on Defence than the rest of the world combined.

But, in absolute numbers, the US defense department is equal to the 14th largest economy on the planet. Or about the same size as Netherlands and Denmark entire economies added together. Or just about equal to the GDP of India.

So what is all the money spent on? Is it mostly human beings, inventing new weapons or just buying new and improved versions?

An excellent question. I'll post a substantive reply after I research the answer.

Just off the top of my head though, salaries for the entire armed forces isn't likely to exceed more than $100 billion, so obviously the vast majority of the money isn't going to pay for the troops.

I'll also be using the 'true' US defense spending (which is just shy of $1 trillion per year) rather than the official Congressional budget figure which is around $540 billion. The official number doesn't include the cost of Afghanistan or Iraqi operations, nor the VA, nor a bunch of other specific military programs.

See chart below. The transfers to other governments is included as this is almost entirely military aid to Israel, Egypt and Pakistan.
