Just for some fun...

The Internet is full of kittens (http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2009/02/10/cat_internet/index.html)

Praise be to dog (http://www.salon.com/mwt/feature/2009/02/10/havrilesky_dogs/index.html)

These are just some light heard peans to pet ownership.

So, do you prefer cats or dogs as pets? :D

I don't have any pets but I like dogs more in general. I had one cat as a child that was my favorite pet mainly because he was lazy and let me pet him all day but for the most part dogs are more fun and friendly. Overall though I choose not to have a pet. My parents have two dogs and it amazes me how much they bend over backwards for them. When I take my kids over there the dogs roam free and I'm expected to keep my boys from messing with them. They also never keep my kids because it would be too hard to manage them both they say. They never leave them at home alone and if it is too hot during the summer to get them out they just don't visit. It's absolutely nuts if you ask me.

I am very, very much a dog person. Dogs are more like the people that I like than cats are I think.

Cats are anarchists. Dogs are slaves. Easy choice.

I changed my avatar for this one :D I vote the kitties because they have enough pride to pretend that their existence does not revolve around me. Needy animals make me feel stalked. The Precious (see avatar) thinks she can make it in the world without me. She can't, because she's too finicky to eat a bird (not too finicky to slaughter one and leave the feathered remains strewn everywhere, though) but I appreciate the confidence.

Aww, that's cause she loves you! The birds are gifts to you.

I love cats because you have to earn their trust. Dogs will roll over for just any dumbfuck, but cats require a certain attitude and prowess. The best is when a once "wild" cat can find no more comfortable place than your lap. It's truly rewarding.

Growing up, we always had cats. The most challenging cat was one my sister dropped in on us when she moved into a no-pets apartment. The cat came from a "crazy-cat-lady" home and my sister is a terror with felines, so we considered the cat emotionally scarred at best. It took my dad and I six months to convince her to let us pet her. I can go home now and she doesn't leave my presence until I leave.

Cats are the bourgeois, dogs are the proletariat.

Not quite. The pedigree of dogs as pets is definitely an aristocratic one. ;)

I agree that cats certainly have bourgeois qualities about them.

Brilliant!

(for the record, I don't like or want pets)

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that this forum leans toward cats instead of dogs. Seriously, I just sensed that before looking at the poll.

And for the record, I'm a dog guy. Hopefully I'll be getting a blue tick coon hound before the year is through.

I had a series of black labs until I became weary of the emotional loss associated with their relatively short lifespan. We now have two cats who allow us to live here as their servants.

That seems so true!

Indeed, if I were to have a pet, it would be a cat for sure - I just like the attitude of cats. :)

Now if I lived in a house in the suburbs, that would be fine, but I don't like the idea of locking up an animal inside my high-rise apartment all the time (thus, I have no pets).

Btw, I think their should be laws against dog-ownership in the inner-cities. There is just no room for them there - and as a result, every tiny slice of grass or parkland in the inner-city serves as nothing more than a big dog toilet (paid for by the city taxpayers - and tax subsidies for dog owners makes zero sense).

I suppose a LARGE annual fee for a dog license in the inner-city might address this problem - considering the substantial expense the City Works department engages in because of this dog toilet game (every park has to be re-sodded every spring with new grass because dog urine apparently kills the grass) - and of course, non-dog owners (essentially) lose the right to use any parkland in the city. Just imagine several hundred dogs using every 1/2 acre sized parkette every day and you can understand how such a park becomes 'non-functional' for any other purpose.

(do not get me started on dog owners using school playgrounds as dog toilets!!!)

I live in a state full of parks, so every where I go, I see dogs taking a shit. I love the dogs, but I hate the owners for being insensitive and lazy. Again, cats are far superior in this category. ;)
