Okay, so who's planning on watching the Oscars?
Looks to me like the most interesting 'race' might be for the 'best actor' category. Personally, I think Sean Penn did a superb job with Milk, but I've not seen the other films. I've been planning to see Frost-Nixon for a while, just haven't gotten to it yet.
Slum Dog Millionaire (which I haven't seen yet either) looks like the favorite for 'best picture', while Kate Winslet looks to be the favorite for 'best actress'.
Anyone got any predictions or favorites for the winner?

Who knows. The Oscars are known for picking things based on expectation or against expectation or because of who they think is next in line to win. Martin Scorsese won Best Director and Best Picture for The Departed even though most do not see it as his best film (I did like it quite a bit but the guy directed Goodfellas and got nothing) and Peter Jackson only one for Return of the King rather than for all three LOTR films although it's usually seen as showing appreciation for the trilogy as a whole. That being said I have seen Slumdog Millionaire and did enjoy it although I don't know if I thought it would be liked that much. I was really shocked that Juno got a nomination last year even though I did like it. I want to take the time to see the other movies up for best picture but I just haven't gotten around to it. I have Milk and Benjamin Button at least on my list of things to see but since the theature here in town doesn't run anything but the top grossing movies I will have to wait until they are on DVD.

My girlfriend really likes the hollywood glam and celebrity shit so I'll probably be watching them with her when I get back from washington.
Of the best film contenders I think I may only have seen Slumdog. I don't really watch a whole ton of movies, though when I do I really enjoy a lot of them.

I don't know whether she's nominated or even if she made a film recently but Cate Blanchett should simply get an Oscar every year. Just for being Cate Blanchett.

She certainly deserved one for both Elizabeth films! I think she got one at least. :ummm:
She really 'dominantes' the screen and that's what great acting is all about. :)

My grew up in that world (not in the film industry) and is an avid fan of what she considers the main event. It's already started here and when I glance at it I'm disappointed in the female clothing designs this year, I like it better when the emphasis is on showing tits.

Correction, my wife grew up in that world.
She does still refer to our moving to rural Oregon as being dropped off in the middle of nowhere.

Well, no surprises for the Academies this year - all the winners were expected.
Slumdog Millionaire wins best picture, Sean Penn takes best actor and Kate Winslet is best actress.

The 'no, not at all' is me by the way. These movies run in the big commercial theatres and I haven't set foot in one since at the premiere of the first LOTR movie children were undisturbedly running around, yelling and playing right in front of the screen. I want to see a movie, I don't want to go to Disneyland.

Nor some multiplex that has all the character of a cardboard box.

Oh, it's over already. In a way, I pride myself in not knowing about the dresses, celebrities, Eurovision Song Contest and all that useless stuff. Not really interested.
I saw Benjamin Button, and I was actually annoyed that he shrunk as he got older/younger. So... I'm hopeless. I mean... that's what left an impression.

Here's an interesting article about the weird way that the Academy makes its picks.
The Carney Consequence
A poor Oscar choice for Best Actor in 1974 set in motion a ripple effect of makeup awards by the Academy that is still being felt today.

There does seem to be a lot to this theory. The academy often gives an Oscar to the wrong nominee - then spends the next ten years screwing over other deserving nominees while it bends over backwards to give the Oscar to some previously screwed nominee from ten years ago for a lame-ass movie this year.
Odd process that. And yes, that Best Actor Oscar in 1974 is a joke.

I just watched Milk and while I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire I must say it didn't move me quite as much.

Never mind the awards - what did you think of the show and the new format.
I thought it was a lot more honest. The stars toasted themselves instead of making lame jokes.
And the host actually sang and danced, like it was Hollywood and not Las Vegas or something.
I heartily dislike the format of a comedian host and lame jokes from actors and then huge emotions. Frankly letting the stars do their thing was a true celebration of the art of movies.
So I for one loved Hugh Jackman and loved the format!
