School shooters, the author of a new book argues, are driven by a toxic mix of adolescent angst and personality disorder. Easing the pain and spotting the warning signs offer the best hope for preventing the next tragedy.

School rampage killings are not a uniquely American phenomenon (Finland has had two horrific cases in recent memory), but the complex set of psychological and sociological conditions that spawn such events are far more likely to spring from the modern suburban landscape in the U.S.

I'm just posting this here because it is an interesting article on a 'rising' phenomenum. The article is quite informative reading if your interested in the topic. :)

I know this subject all too well. There was a school shooting at my high school the year after I graduated and three girls died and several others where injured. Some of my younger friends where there and I actually had met the guy that did it on a few occasions. He was the type of weird kid that was nice (at least when I talked to him) but a target for bullies.

Looks like a very sober and elaborate treatment of the phenomenon. Judging from the article, that book ought to be standard reading for disciplines dealing with those areas of the human mind.

Beats the hell out of the violent computer games excuses or, uncomparably worse, the "it's Darwin's fault".
