On a charter plane from Moscow to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, while they were flying over Khabarovskiy krai, 45-year old passenger Aigul Kochorova informed airline staff that she is pregnant and the baby is due to come out at any moment.

Luckily, fellow passenger Zoya Makhortova, a birth clinic nurse, was aboard. She conducted the birth, with assistance from two stuardesses.

All ended fine, and a healthy boy, weighing 2.9 kg, was born. He was Kochorova's fourth child and fourth son.

Upon arrival, an emergency medical team entered the plane and met the new mother and while they were examining her and the baby, nobody even noticed as modest nurse Makhortova quietly left the plane.

Pilot Viktor Savin later told correspondents he had not had to deal with such incidents before in his fairly long career as a civillian pilot. "I will remember this for a long time for sure", he added, smiling.

It's truly irresponsible to fly at that stage in pregnancy. You usually only see it with women trying to get their child American (or other developed countries with similar laws, I suppose, we just don't hear about it here) citizenship, or if the mother is Sarah Palin.

So true. Btw, USA, Canada, Britain and France are the principal countries that grant citizenship to newborns. There are lots of others, but few of them attract many immigrants.

Huh? No one has to fly. Flying on airplanes is an optional luxury no matter what.

That being said, I think the mother needs to be examined by psychiatrists. If she takes that kind of risk with pregnancy, she could be a dangerous mother. I also think your airlines need some new rules about permitting pregnant women on board aircraft. A nice lawsuit usually settles that problem.
