I always found it odd anyway that some companies had booze at company parties yet drug test their employees. I understand the legality issue but do they really think an alcoholic employee would be better than a pot head?

The spread of drug testing was started by insurers and IMO morphed into a morality issue.

I probably had more problems over alcohol than anything. Between him and this other lady that worked first and drank herself to death. The real trouble usually came when workers got together and had crazy drunken problems which later caused some real personal problems between them afterward. Then there was the fucking drunks that came in every night. I love to get a little drunk but those people drove me nuts.

Alcohol is a very social drug. If everyone is drunk, it's a great time. If some are more drunk than others, then those are the assholes to do dumb shit.
I prefer to drink alone. It's more relaxing, which is why I like to drink.

I was thinking more about when they get drunk and people start fucking that shouldn't. Usually it was a case of couples getting into a groups thing and then regretting it after sobering up. That happened on more than one occasion.

It is Gay Pride Day today.
That's a really big event in Toronto, second only to NYC in size.
As a general rule, this event brings out a million people onto the streets. About six blocks of one downtown street have been closed for several days now (with huge stages, speakers/amplifiers and laser lights set up), and today a half-dozen major streets downtown will be closed for the parade.
It is generally considered to be a quite festive and colorful affair.
Interestingly enough, just about every major 'blue-chip' corporation in Canada is listed as an official sponsor of the event (with the two big beer companies fighting for prominance). Ikea even sponsors a huge free daycare center for the day as part of the event.

I just saw a photo of three of the top members of the Federal Liberals in Canada marching in Toronto's Gay Pride Parade (Ignatieff, Rae and Gerard Kennedy).
There is a reason the Liberal Party considers all seats in Toronto to be 'safe-seats'. The idea of a politician of the Conservative party showing up for an event like this just makes people laugh.
(I'll bet Jack Layton, leader of the Federal NDP party and another local Toronto boy, was there too - Jack has always been very popular with the Gay community)

Here the treatment of homosexuality is very generational. I graduated from high school ten 12 years ago and at that time nobody was out of the closet. There where a few that their closest friends new but that was it. Now according to my nephews it is quite common for homosexual students to be open about it and it's generally excepted other than with a few students who bully people for various reasons anyway. Two things that have changed in my area is that with people under 30 homosexuality is more excepted as well as interracial dating and marriage. You still have older people that are just as pissed off about it and of course the really religious view some of this is a negative light but they are at least now tolerating it. I would say when my kids are in high school they will wonder what all the fuss was about.

So I was listening to the talk of the 2016 Olympics on the radio today. Chicago is the favorite to get it but Rio in Brazil has a decent shot also. A couple other places are fighting for it but are considered long shots. In a way I want Chicago to get it because that always makes it more exciting when it's here and I only live an hour from Southern Illinois although it's more like seven hours from Chicago. On the other hand it seems more fair for Brazil to get it since they have never held the games in South America.

If Chicago gets the Olympics, I hope I don't live around here by 2016. While I don't (and wouldn't) live in Chicago proper anymore, it's still very much a source of interesting local politics. Chicago is the most highly taxed city in the US. Throughout the whole bid process, Daley and the people applying placated the citizens by essentially not agreeing to underwrite the whole thing. However, when it came to crunch time and they were the only city that didn't, they reversed themselves completely and offered a blank check, for which the citizens will be on the hook (they're going to take out some kind of 500 million dollar insurance policy, but that kind of thing isn't exactly free).
In Chicago, there are exorbitant taxes on hotel stays. Restaurants also have a local Chicago tax. This is part of an effort to gouge tourists, along with parking tickets that range from $50-$200 (and deliberately confusing street signs to encourage as many parking tickets as possible). Of course, anyone living in Chicago probably averages five to ten parking tickets per year. People rack up fees of thousands of dollars and simply abandon their cars (there was a parking ticket amnesty once because the city had an epidemic of booted cars whose owners simply left them - I lived there at the time, and on any city block you'd see 5-10 abandoned, booted cars).
Of course, they also nail the locals. City property taxes are through the roof. A city sticker will run you over $100 (compared to $10 or free in most suburbs). Cigarettes are about $10 per pack. At parking meters, a quarter will get you ten minutes (and no, they don't take anything but change because the inevitable ticket is a lot more lucrative than the parking meter). And, on and on, and on. And, this is all without the Olympics being held in a dense, crowded venue without good existing infrastructure to host the Olympics.

Interesting about Chicago and parking. Toronto has all new high-tech solar-powered parking meters that take credit cards and/or debit cards (as well as $1 and $2 coins).
I've never seen a 'boot' on a car except in the USA. In Toronto, if your parked car pisses off the city, they tow it and impound it (and hold the car for ransom in a big parking lot way out in the wastelands of suburbia).
I hope to hell Toronto never gets an Olympics. I can't imagine a bigger waste of money or such a long term hassle for so little return (except decades of debt).

How's the Toronto garbage strike going? I read some of the demands and stopped when I read the union already gets 18 bankable sick days and some members are already up to $100k US annual wages. You need some illegal workers.
Now there is a big conflict between neighborhood groups with the temporary dump sites and the city trying to spray chemicals that are banned by the city onto the dumpsites.
The strike only covers about half the city though. All condos, commerical businesses and high-rise apartments all supply their own garbage disposal. Likewise a couple of the inner suburbs long ago contracted out their garbage collection services and they aren't affected.
And I agree totally that the perversity of such high wages and high level benefits for totally unskilled and uneducated labor boggles my mind.
Public opinion polls are showing roughly 72% of the city's population demanding that the strikers be legislated back to work. The strikers have virtually no public support.
You can guarentee that the Union and the City Council will suffer for this obnoxiousness. Next mayor is going to win by promising to bust the union and contract out garbage collection services - the idiots on strike now have only themselves (and their union) to blame.
No surprise that unionism is dead in North America and its last stronghold is in unskilled government services.
We don't need illegals up here, we need to bust the union and hire proper private contractors.

You can have summer in Florida. I hate it. I disappear inside with the AC about mid-June and don't come out again until mid-October. Eighty percent humidity and eighty degrees at 11pm? Bah!

That's what we call "summer" up here, though we like to get that humidity above 90% for full effect! :)
I live for that weather!
I also refuse to use air conditioning in my car and I never activate it at home - ever.

95° here at 4PM (10° above our normal average) with..........21% humidity, steady 6MPH breeze. Cools down to about 70° by 10PM and 55-60° after midnight for very pleasant evenings and sleep. Time for some cold beer.

Yuck. How can you stand it without air conditioning? The older I get, the harder time I have with the heat and humidity.

That sounds nice. I can take higher heats, as long as it's dry heat. And 55-60 degrees at night is just heavenly.

The older I get the more I prefer the heat. :)
I've grown up all my life living with the annual summer humidity - it seems 'normal' to me. Being slim and fit, it doesn't bother me in any way, though I could well understand the overweight and the respiratory-challenged being rather troubled by high humidity.
As for my living space, living high in the air has its advantages - especially being on a corner unit. No matter how hot it gets during the day, when the sun goes down, the winds come off the lake and there is always a nice cool breeze - by 11pm every night, a nice breeze blows through and will clear out the humidity. These breezes are apparently only a few hundred feet in the air - not at ground level. :)
Some days I swear I can get 75 mph wind speeds going in my hallway if I open up ALL my windows. Doors will be slamming, lamps will be falling off tables and papers will be flying around like mad.

55-60 degree nights we get six months a year. I'd rather sit outside at midnight in a t-shirt and shorts with 75-80 degrees.

Having lived in a variety of temperature zones I must say I really despise high summer humidity. Breaking out in a serious sweat from any slight movement, especially when dressed for business/pleasure, is not fun. And the misery of trying to sleep (or should I say swim) in high humidity without AC is too nasty to even think about.

High heat and humidity suck because they make me cranky, make it hard to concentrate, and make normally simple things seem like the biggest chore.

We have been going through a few weeks here of BEAUTIFUL weather. It has been in the low-mid 70s during the day, some sun, and no humidity. Last night it was in the low-60s.
During the day, I prefer to put the windows up and getting some fresh air in, but I have to make sure the AC is on before Chet gets home or he is walking around saying, "Its fucking hot in here!" What a baby:rofl:
(And, Michael you're crazy for not using the air conditioning in your car! I have been driving around for the past two and a half years with none and it is pure hellish torture)

You took the words out of my mouth.
I spent some time in Arizona a couple of months ago. The temperature was routinely around 90 while I was there, but there was no humidity to speak of, and I was perfectly comfortable standing outside and even hiking. It's the humidity that sucks the life out of me. I don't have difficulty breathing or moving around, but I start to sweat easily, and I don't like being sweaty unless I'm doing some kind of work out or fixing up my place. Sweating at gatherings of people when I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt makes me want to leave and return to my air conditioned house.

I tend to avoid visiting certain friends/family during the summer because I consider their houses to be brutally uncomfortable and a health hazard due to air-conditioning. Those people always have summer colds it seems from going in and out from ice cold to steaming hot.

Yes, sleeping in high humidity without AC is quite nasty.
I'm saying that if you live 250' up in the air, it is quite easy to live without AC even in a city notorious for 90% relative humidity in the summer (Toronto gets the same summer weather as Chicago and NY City).
The point is that traditionally-built suburban houses trap heat and humidity. They are bad designs. High rise buildings can easily be vented naturally and it works quite well.
(And, Michael you're crazy for not using the air conditioning in your car! I have been driving around for the past two and a half years with none and it is pure hellish torture)
I disagree. Cars with windows closed is stuffy and unpleasant. With AC on cars are just nasty. I don't want to have to wear sweaters indoors in summer. I think that's silly and a huge waste of energy.

Here is a example of how religious our area is. The local NBC affiliate posted something on their Facebook page about a new application on the iPhone that is for sending texts to god and asks if it crosses a line. Several dozen posts came up about how people need to start praying and it's the only thing that works all from different people. Just for the hell of it I posted that I thought it would work about as well as praying does and sure enough I'm receiving tons of messages about how I need to except the Lord and on and on. Not one person came to my defense or offered any sort of opinion that doesn't agree with the religious consensus on the issue.

I lived in Las Vegas for a number of years and the cumulative effect of suburban population growth on humidity was amazing.
First, official temperatures/humidity, etc. in Vegas are recorded at the airport from a sensor on the top of the control tower, approximately 150' in the air. I remember having out-of-town guests watching a televised weather report and commenting "wow, it's 110°". I then took them into my office to look at my weather station console, the outdoor sensor 20' in the air, 118°. We then went outside to the patio where a thermometer read 121°. It's a tourist city and folks would balk at willingly visit 121°.
Regarding summer humidity, in Vegas I watched it go from single digits to an average of 40-50% just from sprawling urban population growth quadrupling the population. Everyone had to have a lawn, a pool, golf courses catering to the large retired population went in like rabbits multiplying and of course every dwelling had a couple of high tonnage AC units cooling dwellings with poorly insulated 2x4 exterior walls. That's a lot of artificially generated moisture forced into a desert climate and the resulting humidity made conditions not only miserably hot but humid hot. From April through September everyone worshiped the AC gods.
While I'm rambling on I remember a now deceased aunt tell stories about growing up in the Arizona desert during the 1920s. No electricity, much less fans, swamp coolers or AC, during summers they slept outside in a screened porch with wet sheets draped over them, awaking every hour or so to sprinkle more water on the sheets until they collapsed from pure exhaustion.

Nothing surprising there. 99% of those who are reading/posting there are those who are dedicated in their belief system based on prayer. It is likely a big echo chamber with those people just reinforcing each other's faith.
People who are skeptical of the enterprise mostly ignore it and thus are not present.
Kinda like the small-town preacher saying that he's never met an atheist in his life. Probably true. When that preacher deduces that there probably very few real atheists because of this, that's when he's living in his bubble. Intelligent atheists tend to avoid small-towns and preachers the same way that atheists and skeptics tend to avoid posting to discussions about 'dial-a-prayer' (or whatever).

It's difficult for me to imagine any Southern news outlet that doesn't cater to the far-right former Dixiecrat Christian crowd. Their local advertising base would demand it do so as they're the predominant demographic.
Pushing buttons can be fun but with the fundies it's always circular from and to faith in mythology.

Public pools are cesspools. Private pools are just holes in the ground in which one pours in unnecessary time, money and chemicals. One of the neighbors has a plastic kiddie pool. He sits in it and drinks beer. I don't get it, but to each his own.

Sounds like they're proud of their racism. When I lived in the South the n-word was used by whites in two distinct manners:
The upper class kept it confined within friends/family/business acquaintances with colored being used as often as the n-word, but never the n-word where the audience wasn't well-known.
The lower class seemingly had no restrictions.

My curious random thought of the day... about Americans and always using short forms for everything. This seems to be a particularly modern phenomena...
December 7, 1941 - "a day that will live in infamy" is always stated as "December 7th" - often with the word "Sunday" added as well - never 12/7.
Likewise with November 22, 1963 - another famously tragic date in American history - always "November 22nd" - not 11/22.
September 11, 2001 - a similarly tragic date was nicknamed by the media as "9/11" within hours of the event taking place. And rarely ever mentioned as September 11th by anyone.
That's a recent change.

Generally when people attempt communication with me in that fashion, I simply ignore the message. My take is that if you can't be bothered to type the message in intelligible fashion, I can't be bothered to respond to it.

I'm just too busy for serious debates. If I tried to get involved in anything other than light discussion it would be hard since I would only likely reply once a day at most.
And what's wrong with a discussion moving along at one post per day? That seems perfectly reasonable. Heck, I'm hard-pressed to keep up that fast pace with most discussions I'm involved in.
I see nothing wrong with a discussion based on one post per week or whatever.
Discussions are not a race. :)

No, but they do tend to get carried away without you. It's difficult to keep a steady discussion when everyone else gets a post or two in before you check in next.

That's the nature of a forum discussion - it doesn't have to be 'steady' or linear (though people seem to treat them that way).
I see no problem with replying to posts on an earlier page of the discussion. Discussion is discussion - it is meant to be flexible and open-ended.
And I think threads that bounce around with two or three (or more) different discussions going on is more interesting.
And there's no rule against "necroposting" here at all. :erm:

It's "Yankee Plate Day" in Toronto...
Meaning that the roads up here are filled with all kinds of US license plates for the next few days. And not just the usual NY, Pennsylvania, Ohio & Illinois plates that are normally the most common ones I see around here. This weekend brings out the Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Carolinas, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana plates in great numbers.
The reason for this is the Caribana Festival - apparently the largest authentic Caribbean music festival in the world. No one is quite sure how Toronto ended up being the host of this thing since Caribbean immigrants aren't all that numerous here (they don't make Toronto's top ten list of ethinic groups).
Either way, this parade has been going on for several decades and draws about a million people for a giant weekend long street party. Visually speaking, this festival is much like Marti Gras with fabulous and elaborate costumes, music and dancing.
Apparently every 'steel drum' band in the Caribbean spends their entire year fundraising for their annual trip to the Caribana Festival as the festival serves as a big competition for these bands.

And yes, I might add that I'm perfectly aware that the term "Yankee" has a specific socio-cultural meaning and to the 'old' New England region and that it can be considered an insult when used to refer to Southerns. :)
However, I respectfully submit that for most non-Americans on the planet, the term "yankee" is the unofficial (and quasi-polite) nickname for Americans or anything American. The term is entirely generic and applies to all things American. You can be sure that 99% of non-Americans have no clue what the actual or original meaning of the term, or its strong geographic/socio-cultural distinction within the USA.
Besides, Americans ought to just be happy they haven't been tagged with an ugly moniker like "Limey", "Kraut" or "Frog". :D

Can anyone type out a phonetic pronunciation of that word? I'm curious how to say it. It appears to be entirely 'unspeakable' with English rules.
The closest you may come is probably [loo-NAH-sath], the more technical pronunciation is not much different but for a sound that doesn't occur in English known as a guttural "G". The terminal sound is a hard "th" as in "the", not a soft "th" as in "three". You know that sound that's made in Hebrew at the beginning of words like "Hanukkah" and "Hallah"? Those are guttural "K"s. Now add your voice to it to make a G and you have the guttural G sound. The phonetic alphabet would show it as:
[luɣ-nəs-əð]
The English/Latin alphabet representations of Gaelic words are quite confusing. In all the languages I've seen represented of the Indo-European family it is probably the most difficult to represent in that alphabet. The bizzare letterings that don't seem to be pronounced as they are written usually have something to do with the root word having that sound but none of its declensions, conjugations or tenses having it other than the one root. The Gaelic languages are very strange and very few phonological rules make sense with them. Then again, perhaps it is our wobbly English rules that throw the real wrench in the machine.
You could also cop-out and call this holiday Lammas (pronounced [LAM-mass]) and make life a little easier :)

Down to high 90s. But, as they used to say in Vegas, humidity was very low (21%). Glad to hear the weather is breaking a bit. The 55 at night sounds like heaven to me. I judge the humidity here by how much condensation is on the outside of the windows when I awake. Most mornings in the summer the sliding glass doors are dripping and I can't tell if it's rained until I look out on the deck. The tree frogs like it.

Yes, I'm sure this is very common. I think Hotel California and White Rabbit are particularly famous examples of this - songs that seem to be far more famous and popular than the bands or albums they came from.
As for enjoying EVERY cut on an album, I think only Pink Floyd is capable of providing that. Wish You Were Here comes to mind for this. Did you trade your heros for gold?

Grace Slick's erratic lifestyle complete with every addiction known to man and some serious mental problems didn't exactly add any continuity to Jefferson Airplane's ability to churn out the hits. I remember seeing them in San Francisco when she was so messed up a stagehand had to lead her back to her spot after she had wobbled almost offstage.
I've known quite a few musicians during my life and was always amazed at how they could still perform and even remember all the words to endless songs while absolutely and completely fried.

They, along with some other, smaller prog bands of the era, were able to sit listeners down for whole albums because they actually created the albums to be one fantastic composition. I think it's the lack of pauses in between the songs that really make them feel connected and, therefore, worthy of giving the whole thing a listen.

Well, I do have a job, a life and an IQ well into triple digits... and I have had post count levels over 10,000 at a couple forums in the past.
However, I've been 'cheating' my post count for quite a while here. My real post count is much more than double or possibly triple that and probably represents about half of all posts made at this forum. I've been sitting in the 1800 to 1900 range for the last six months or so! ;)
It may be a fool's game, but I'm trying to prevent my postcount from looking outrageously large while everyone else's post count is so much less. I don't like being the center of attention (believe it or not, that's not my style at all). I much prefer a low profile.
I'd really like it if some other people had a higher post count than I do here at this forum! :)
So thus, I use a manual override to restate my postcount whenever it gets too close to 2000.

I guess I love abuse because I keep getting involved in discussions on a local board even though the people on it are idiots. There was a couple kids in a local county that came down with swine flu and it turned into a discussion about how the school district is too hard on parents about attendance which is why they say some kids go to school sick. I pointed out that they are allowed more sick days per semester than I missed all through high school and then people start going on and on about how the government is too controlling and everybody should home school. While I realize that some parents are intelligent and responsible enough to do this I would argue that the vast majority of them have no business trying to teach a child anything. I could only imagine how much worse this country would be if everybody home schooled.

Yes, that must have been like a 'breath of fresh air' on US media. :)
It is so tiresome the way the US media talking heads tend to adopt partisan Republican framing of political hot-words all the time and never push-back against such blatant lies and propaganda fed to them by Republican political operatives.
This is very different to the way they treat partisan Democratic issues. For example, polls show that a solid 75-80% of Democratic party voters want a 'single-payer' healthcare system adopted in the USA. One barely even hears this topic mentioned in the mass media or by political elites. That's what the Democratic party base is demanding.
But we certainly do hear what the Republican party base is interested in - 7/24/365.
So it sure is nice to see, as Donkey pointed out, some media pushback against the absurd notion of "real Americans". That is so very rare. The media talking heads are normally quite comfortable allowing 'rural red-state white Americans' to claim this exclusive title and use it as a political weapon against everyone else. That's just blatant partisan bias.

I just found it refreshing that somebody refused to indulge the "real american" line.
He was lucky. In some places, my rural area included, he could have been physically injured for his response. We still have people supporting both the Iraq and Afghanistan fiascoes with anyone speaking against them being a bad American. That's the reason I don't go to town any more than required.

I'm glad some people have a damn sense of humor. I showed the clips to some people I work with and they thought the baby hunching the doll was "wrong."
Ah, yes! And, the lovely State decided to come waltzing in today. What fun that is to see everyone come out of their little offices and help for once.

My Dad came to visit and fixed my table, two chairs, my bathroom sink and my TV!
My TV was a black screen with a white line and I had to wait like 2 hours for the pic to pop up. Everyone said I have to just go buy a new one. Dad stood up and said I'll fix it, and gave it a good wack.
I have a picture now!
I don't have to buy a new TV!

Well, I wouldn't trade my nasty bastard of a father for anything in the world.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that great intellectuals, like great artists, are a product of dysfunctional families.
Without that bastard hating my guts from the time I was a little child, I doubt if I'd be half the man I am.
Nice happy families are wonderful, but they tend to produce mediocre artists and intellectuals who lack the fire and the passion to rise above the norm.

You don't need a photobucket account to have an avatar.
You can choose from the library of colorful and/or amusing avatars available here at DWF. Or you can upload a picture directly from your computer to this server to use for that purpose.
Alternatively, I can assign an avatar to you! :D

I always found it easier to write a 20 page essay by planning on a 30 page essay. Write out everything you can think of, then edit out the crap and bring it down to 20pp.
I never sumbitted a paper at university that was graded less than "A" (and those were rare ones, most were "A+" or higher) ;)

I'm doing both. Doesn't leave a lot of time for beer pong. :(
I've figured that my combo of work and school, in terms of time spent on it, totals out to about the equivalent of going to school only and taking 6 or 7 full courses per semester. Of course, at school, the professors never pulled me into their offices and said, "Can you fly across the country tomorrow and stay their for a week?"

I normally time-budgeted one hour per 1000 words for writing. This would be independent of research time.
Thus, for a 20,000 word essay, I'd time-budget 20 hours. That's just me though. I often invest about one hour for any substantial post I make at this forum.

What is higher than an A+?
See, for me it was the opposite. I got an assignment for a 6 page paper, or a 12 page paper, or a 20 page paper, or whatever, and in my head I figured out how much research and content and whatnot I would need, then I would sit down to write it (usually in one go), and come up with something up to double the necessary length.

I had one paper that was given "A++" and one that was "A+++++++++++++" (actually, it had 17 pluses and was marked as 110%). That latter paper also received considerable attention from other professors as well as being entered into a contest for undergrad papers.

Yes, the needy and self-centered are a pain in the fucking ass, but as many as you come across in a day, the one that looks at you and smiles and says, "thank you" and truly means it makes it all worth while. There's one at the home that calls me "Number One" and whether or not I'm assigned to her she'll ask for me to put her to bed at night. I wouldn't do it for just anyone, but I do it for her if I have the time. The woman truly appreciates the work I do for her and everyone else.

One piece of advice I have for writing papers is in the research stage.
Whenever you find anything you MIGHT want to use in your paper, I would suggest that you type out the quotation or data and a full bibliographic citation for it right there when you find it.
That way when you go to write your paper, you've got all your footnotes already and never have to worry about them.
I actually would write my paper with the footnote/citation in brackets right under my quote and leave it there right until I'm finished. Then I collect the citation/footnotes and enter them as actual footnotes.

It is part of the (pre)nursing curriculum. It is the only class I have in the program besides the nursing courses, so hopefully I will be starting the program in the spring. They say that Microbiology is pretty damn rough. From what I hear you're supposed to look at (micro)organisms and be able to identify them and what all they do. I'm sure there is much more to it, because I haven't met too many people who have passed it either!
And, please don't envy the break too much. Do you know how hard it is to have a break between 1:20-6 at night?! The motivation to get back out is just horrible!

So I'm in Communications class this morning and everyone had to give a 1-2 minutes speech about themselves. It wasn't exactly my idea of "fun" but oh well...at the end, my professor asked if she missed anyone on the roster. This poor guy raises his hand and goes on to explain that she hadn't called his name, but he wasn't "technically" in the class. He is thinking about transferring into our class and thought that he would just come sit in that way "he didn't miss anything." :ummm:
My professor politely told him that according to university rules he wasn't allowed to be in the class until he was registered and proceeded to tell him to leave. Everyone got a good laugh (even the poor sap), but I did feel sorry for the him. He sat there for over an hour and by the time all this happened there was only 10 minutes left in class.
