Police detain 100 on Manezh Square
by Evgeniya Chaykovskaya (http://themoscownews.com/authors/chaykovskaya/) at 10/10/2011 15:24
Moscow police have detained numerous people on Manezh Square on Saturday for attempts to hold an unauthorized nationalist rally over the alleged murder of a teenage CSKA fan by an Azerbaijan-born man in a fight.
More than 10 busses with OMON riot police arrived on the square in central Moscow on Saturday morning. Regular police were also patrolling the square. Entry to both the square and Okhotny Ryad shopping center were not blocked, however.
Youth round-up
The rally was originally planned for the afternoon, but any groups of young men that appeared were quickly corralled by the police and taken to awaiting busses. Policemen approached everyone who looked like young nationalists and checked their documents and bags.
Queues of youngsters dressed in trainers, sweatpants and hoodies soon formed by the busses.
Hundred detained
In the evening police reported that 98 people were detained, taken to the police station for “prophylactics talks” and were checked for relations with nationalist movements before they were let go.
Police also confiscated flares, smoke bombs, non-lethal pistols and metal rods.
However, out of 98 detained, only one charge was laid for minor disorderly conduct.
Fan’s murder
Podolsk resident and CSKA fan Andrei Uryupin, 18, was killed and his friend was injured in a fight with Azerbaijan-born Khosruvlo Nail outside of a nightclub on Oct. 2.
Nail, 20, was charged with murder and attempted murder of two people, but has fled and has been put on an international wanted list.
After Uryupin’s death football fans and ultra-right nationalists called for a new “Manezh Square” on Oct. 8.
Manezh riots
Manezh Square became a setting for a 5,000-strong nationalist riot on Dec. 11, 2010, when a vigil for murdered Spartak fan Yegor Sviridov was hijacked by nationalists.
“A repeat of events on Manezh is still possible,” Sova analytical center expert Maria Rozalskaya told Kommersant. “But for this to happen there has to be a significant reason. Nationalists have not yet found any reasons to gather in such numbers.”

But, the nationalists need a reason to cause trouble...
