I'll start this thread off with the first entry...

"An inornate fondness for beetles"

I stumbled upon the Wiki entry for this interesting fellow when I followed up on that curious quotation, cited above, that I came across while reading some philosophy paper online this morning.

In reply to the general question of what nature can teach us about the God/creator, Haldane's famous reply was that God has 'an inornate fondness for beetles'.

This is in reference to the fact that there are more species of beetles than any other insect and that there are many more species of insects than any other kind of animal.

This very clever comment is apparently only one of several other famously clever statements attributed to this same fellow. The Wiki entry is short and well worth reading. :)
