This just came out: on May 9th, when Putin, Medvedev, and Minister of Defense Anatoly Serdyukov attended the Victory Day military parade in Red Square, a team of snipers was strategically positioned along the walls to cover the whole area.

Probably from FSO, Federal Protection Service, our Secret Service. They have their own Specnaz-type groups for this sort of thing. It scared the hell out of some journalists at the parade when they managed to get these snapshorts: imagine, you seat there for two hours and, unbeknownst to you, you are constantly in someone's crosshairs. http://www.military-quotes.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif Oh, well, that's their job though.

Is that not normal? That's so run of the mill here.

Well, technically we know our leaders are closely guarded and protected. But it did rattle some people to see those guys and realise they were being aimed at through the whole parade.

Looks pretty routine stuff for the US President's open public appearances.

Yeah absolutely. When I drove in POTUS's motorcade, I was directly behind the CAT (Counter assault team). I.e. a Suburban with an open back window full of dudes with m-16s.
