A lawyer and a journalist who had helped Chechens with their complaints were murdered by a Russian nationalist helped by his girlfriend.

The two murders have been sentenced in Moscow, one to life imprisonment, the accomplice to 10 years.

Good that justice is done.
Violence against anyone for what they are, gay or Chechen is not on.

It is good. But it does not mean any violence will end. Xenophobia and racism are widespread. Nationalism.

It is a violent country. I read on one website for example, a Cossack in Rostov was bragging how when a Georgian man had apparently got into a confrontation with his niece, and there was a fight, and then he and his brothers and nephews found and killed that man and two of his, also Georgian, friends, stabbed and strangled them. He then describes how his clan had killed 15 others over the years, mostly other Caucasians, in different grievances and conflicts.

He was, actually, saying, learn you Russians from us Cossacks how to defend your women and your land.

He was arrested at one point, but armed Cossacks from his clan blocked the police vehicle on a desrted road and freed him, holding the three policemen at gun point.

That's the way this country is...

I just can't understand why the Russians don't try to get independence from the Cossacks. Do the Cossacks contribute to the economy?

And Cossacks defent their women? By cheating on them with non-Cossacks? By refusing to let them have any contact at all with other men? Cossack men defend themselves, no one else.

We need the Cossacks. They are one force in the South who can stand against Chechen and other Wahabi Islamists, only ones who can match them in force.

Not in the South, where there are more Islamists than regular Russians. In Stavropolie and other regions bordering North Caucasian republics, Slavic population consistently has been turning to Cossacks for protection. In Stavropolie, recently, a orphanage had gave all their children, 400 in total, to the local Cossack community, to be raised in their clans, in their customs and ways. That's how it is over there.
