Here's the top 5:

1. Caracas, Venezuela (130 murders per 100,000 population)
2. Cape Town, South Africa (62 murders per 100,000 population)
3. New Orleans, United States (67-95 murders per 100,000 population)
4. Moscow, Russia (9.6 murders per 100,000 population) - this looks like a typo
5. Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (54 murders per 100,000 population)

The article notes that London, Paris, Rome, and Madrid, for instance, all had rates below 2 murders per 100,000 in 2006.

I'm rather surprised to find Washington DC missing off the list... and where's Johannasburg?

Here are the recovered replies to this post thread...

Caracas doubles the number 2!!!

Where's Bagdad ?

I didn't know New Orleans was that bad. I expected Johannesburg to be worse than Cape Town, too.

I wonder what city, among all cities with 500,000 inhabitants or more, is the least murderous.

In Iraq silly! ;)

That would be an interesting question!

I'm guessing it probably wouldn't be in the USA though...

Note that list is for cities over 250,000 even.

Well, that proves that... I notice that only Honolulu and Plano Texas manage to get under the 2 per 100,000 figure. I know Toronto has a rate of between 1.8 and 1.9 and is the lowest in Canada for cities over 500,000.

And here's a chart with just US cities showing murder rates...

In 2005 Baltimore topped Motor City (Detroit) for murders! I'd never have thought that possible.
