School starts tomorrow. Until 02/14 my schedule is Tuesday/Wednesday. I have OB and MedSurg clinicals on those days and then straight into lecture. After the 14th, I have clinicals on Monday/Wednesday with lecture on Tuesday/Wednesday.
Yes, this is pointless to describe but I am freaking out about seeing a baby come out of a vagina. Go ahead and laugh, but the film The Miracle of Life scarred me. I will be learning IVs and trachs right off the bat... I believe that should cover my "basic" skills considering I know how to administer meds, give shots (ID, SQ, IM), perform wound care and insert a catheter.

It does seem odd that EVERY single US media site and political blog is filled, wall-to-wall with breathless coverage of the Arizona shooting.
There are literally hundreds if not thousands of US media sites and blogs all posting the same limited information over and over again.
Looks like the 'plane-crash' dynamic in play.

They used to. But by the looks of the loney crossing guards, I'm thinking that if mommy doesn't come to pick up the kids for lunch in the SUV, the kids are stuck at school.
Also keep in mind that I live in an urban metropolis. We have elementary schools on every other block, so no one ever has to send their kid to school that is more than an 1/8th of mile away and the vast majority it is only a couple hundred yards. But I certainly do see school buses lined up to pick up kids to drive them 100 yards to the school on the next block.
Btw, I walked home for lunch every day from Grade 1 to Grade 8. And I don't think I ever saw one of those crossing guard people until I was an adult. They didn't have them when I was a kid (when EVERYONE walked to and from school).

When I first heard this, I thought the CRTC had lost its head. Then I read that it wasn't the CRTC (Government body much like FEC).
This seems a bit weird. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council is industry-run. It is their self-regulatory body (not Government). One rarely hears anything about them.
As always, I consider censorship absurd. Indeed, like the FEC in the USA, it is weird the way these bodies object to minor things (wardrobe malfunctions, or song lyrics) yet don't seem to care about the massive quantity of brutal violence that is routinely broadcast.
I consider the violence routinely permitted in hockey games to be far more offensive than a pop-song using the word "faggot". Indeed, one can hear that word used routinely in every context EXCEPT in songs on the radio? That's absurd.
In many cases, the violence in a routine game of hockey would get you arrested if you weren't actually playing hockey. There are lots of things I consider far more offensive than any silly word - they are all routinely ignored.

I generally agree with the point about schoolyards and a tendency to pick on loners, misfits and queer-looking folk (minorities), but blondes are also usually a minority outside of Sweden and they never are picked on for being ugly and redheads usually aren't either. It is a specific thing with 'gingers'.
Indeed, both blondes and redheads are generally considered attractive in society and actual redheads are certainly as rare as gingers.
As a chubby ginger the You Tube commentator must have taken some serious flak in school.
Case in point. ;)
But a chubby kid is going to take flak in school to begin with, regardless if he's a ginger, redhead or an average brunette.
Is auburn considered ginger?:erm:
I don't think so. Auburn seems to be a natural crossbreed of the redheads and the brunettes. ;)
My mother originally had auburn hair (from northern England). I say "had" only because it shifted to brown as she got older, and is now grey. :)
I want to say "yes" and come up with some elaborate definition on the spectrum of gingers, but I would lying.
Gingers are typically pale kiddos with red/orange hair. Freckles are generally included.
Yes, pale or pink, with orange hair, freckles usually included, but not the true redheads. Redheads are redheads, not gingers.
What is often called 'strawberry blonde' should be considered a ginger, as they almost always have with that same pale/pink complexion as well.
My point is, look at hollywood or the history of Playboy Bunnies - I'm betting there are quite a few famously sexy/beautiful gingers.
I just don't see where this odd point of culture comes from. In reality, gingers are generally fairly attractive. There has to be some particular reason that gingers are picked on the way they are picked on for being gingers, as if this type of hair-coloring is associated with retardedness or something.

Given that a huge portion of Hispanics are essentially a mix of European and Black African. Fricken most of the Spanish speaking Caribbean (i.e. Puerto Rico, Cuba and Dominica) are varying shades of that black-white mix.

Not to be confused with the Aryan Brotherhood (a big and completely different deal), the Aryan Nation has been pretty well scattered. The former headquarters was in Hayden Lake, ID (it was considered a joke, I used to drive by it) but the feds and a civil award took that away in 2001. There are outposts in PA and SC but nothing that I'm aware of in Spokane, WA.
Almost sounds like yet another DHS 'publicity' endeavor to keep the citizenry aware of terrorism and DHS diligence in protecting them. Who but a government agency is dumb enough to place a bomb on a bench with wires hanging out?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Spokane in eastern Washington State, and rather close to the Idaho border? Spokane looks like the 'nearest' point of civilization for much of northwestern Idaho.

Spokane, WA is the the nearest large city (200,000) to what's known as Idaho's 'Panhandle'. Coeur d'Alene, ID (pop. 44,000) is the largest city in Idaho's Panhandle and about 30 miles from Spokane.
Coeur d'Alene has the largest concentration of retired law enforcement personnel in the US and ironically enough is only six miles from Hayden Lake, the former home of the Aryan Nation. Some of the most beautiful country in the US (not Spokane).

Really? I admit that Bloom County was funny (I loved Opus the Penguin), but overall, I didn't think that comic had much substance. Nothing to compare with Calvin & Hobbes or Far Side.
Doonsbury has never been my taste and I've always hated that comic strip - way too 'insidery' for me and rarely ever funny. Never liked the politics either, though I didn't know the politics 'evolved' over time - that would help the comic. When I first discovered it, it was way too rightwingy anti-left for my taste and just came across like Fox News crap.

Trying to eliminate the 'double-space' after the end of a sentence is very difficult to do when that is how one was trained to type (on a typewriter).
Given that I 'sight-type' without ever looking at a keyboard and am pretty damn fast - almost all of my typing skills are essentially 'subconscious' - including the automatic habit of hitting the spacebar twice at the end of a sentence.
I've been trying to stop doing it for over a year now - I just can't stop doing it. My fingers are trained to automatically make that motion without me 'commanding' it. Trying to uncommand them is very difficult. At best, I can only go through a passage after I type it an remove the 2nd spaces (which is very tedious and a silly waste of time).

I have the same habit. Even on my phone, I have to fight the urge to double space on my QWERTY pad as a space takes up one of my precious 160 characters.
So, why are you trying to break a perfectly respectful habit. If I wanted to break a habit, I could think of a thousand vice habits I would nix before I got around to typing style.

I learned keyboarding on a typewriter. Before that, I used computers, but typed with my fingers and didn't know any better. Besides, I love the clean look of that extra space between sentences. It may not be efficient, but I can sacrifice for a nice looking type-written page.

Heck, I remember the computer lab in high school having punch cards!
I'm sure some around here will say that shows my age since they didn't have 'computer labs' in high schools back then!
And yes, we had 'typing' classes in high school. It was a option, and not surprisingly, it was always filled with girls. Anyway, I'm glad I took the class as the skills it gave me have been enormously useful over the years. I can honestly say that I can type way faster than I could possibly write. Indeed, typing is as much an 'ingrained' skill as learning to write.
(Hence the difficulty of adjusting a habit)
As for 'why', I guess I'm just going along with what a bunch of people bitch about - apparently it annoys the heck out of a lot of people. Though I must agree, that it is visually pleasing overall and I do like it. :)

Laserdiscs. They're our generation's Betamax.
In elementary, my fourth grade year was spent in the 'gifted' class, so we had ALL the tech...that being two Commodore 64s and two Apple IIs. Our class was in the building my mother went to elementary school in (and perhaps my grandmother).
In fifth grade, I elected to return to 'normal' classes where the school shared a computer room filled with Apple IIs. We didn't see another PC until high school when we were offered the elective Computers course, which was the easiest A ever since I had had a home PC since middle school.

Real Canadians eat back bacon though (aka 'Canadian bacon' for the American types) - a far superior product!!! :D
We formerly used a microwave for bacon and vegetables until discovering an oven produces better vegetables as it doesn't break down the tissue like the microwave. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, etc. sprinkled with a little olive oil, seasoned and baked at 350° in an oven can't be beat.

And healthy people don't eat red meat:p
That's what people say. And I agree that people who eat nothing but red meat probably aren't very healthy, but like everything else, eating protein rich foods in moderation is good for human physiology.
That being said, the few people I do find that are the least healthy (those prone to never ending colds, flu's and various minor ailments) are the vegetarians that I know (who also happen to be clean freaks, so that might explain it).
Also, diets that are very heavy with vegetables are just fart-city and I think that's annoying and something to avoid. I don't want to be a cow. In my opinion, everything in moderation seems to be the best rule for food intake.

Indeed.
My doctor thinks I'm a freak the way I have been a drinker, smoker and pot smoker since I was 14 years old, yet I apparently have the lung capacity of the average 30 year old non-smoker. I also have a fitness level and body-fat level that puts most of my own age-circle to shame. I also have perfectly normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels (apparently at the low end of the scale). I'm certainly a red meat eater, though not in excess (once or twice a week max).
Just not in excess.
Yes, that's the real lesson about red meat (or red wine, or anything else!).

I didn't know you smoked the non-whacky-tobaccy. I THOUGHT I KNEW YOU!
My health has decreased dramatically since I started working in a cubicle last year. I've plumped on around 50 pounds and get winded much more easily than what I used to. Its hard to motivate myself to exercise when its either so hot outside I can't breathe or so fucking cold I can't feel my face. To be fair, I've never been one to 'work out', so that's not new.
Its just that I could maintain my slightly healthier 'chubby' body with a decent workout through my work, allowing me to eat pretty much as I wanted. That's becoming a problem now (along with my 30pack a week habit).
With a little luck, though, I'll be back to sweating my ass off with physical labor and keeping away from the beer at a new job within a month. I'm interviewing Monday to manage a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I would say "Wish me luck," but I need that as much as I need your prayers. ;) Some professional interview tips would be nice, though.

I stopped drinking beer casually at home since I figured that was a real risk for weight gain since everyone I knew who was drinking beer at home every night was just getting fat.
One thing I do to keep active (since I do work at a desk all my life) is to NEVER use an elevator or escalator if stairs are available. And yes, I use the stairs in my building most of the time (I live on 29th floor). I also never use office telecom systems at work. If I have a question for someone, I get up and go ask them.
I also never do any formal 'work-out' thing. I do simple calisthenics at home (pushups, situps and kneebends). That is plenty enough exercise if you do it regularly.

Depends on dietary habits and exercise. I'm a beer drinker but limit my intake of sugar (zilch), colas (zilch), starches, saturated and trans fats (almost zilch) while keeping a close eye on the daily calorie intake. I do normally get a decent amount of exercise but the calorie intake and type of food is equally important.

Household Tip
We use and very much like these automatic soap dispensers in the kitchen and bathrooms. Try one and you'll never go back to pumps.
The only deterrent is cost and inconvenience of the refill cartridges, $3.49 here for a couple of ounces. I put a ½" hole in the tops of used cartridges and now simply refill them (without removing the cartridges) from a $1.97 64 ounce container of soap.

Please tell me they ... shortened ... the anatomy to facilitate concentration on the specific area!!! Then again, seem to me to do two things:
1) Draw attention to the fact that there's not a realistic penis there.
2) Make the testicular exam falsely easier without the rest of the anatomy ... getting in the way - that's not the right phrase I'm looking for but I think you know what I mean.
Both of these things the exact opposite of what I'd expect in a nursing programme.

Yes, it was an intentional shortage of the penis. We have been discussing oncology and this, along with the breast model had lumps so we would know what to feel for and/or teach to patients (e.g. the epididymis is normal, but can seem abnormal to a male who has not performed a self exam before).

Yes, and the reasons are entirely legalistic. Nothing surprising there at all.
Pictures offer 'proof' that can be shown in the media or a courtroom. And when your corporate profits come from breaking laws, hiding the evidence is very important - buying legislation to protect your ass (and profits) is relatively cheap.

I don't know the origins of this piece of legislation, but I do know that one of the ways big-ag actually causes a lot of headaches for small farmers whose crops get contaminated with GMO seed is by raiding their properties illegally and taking video and photographic evidence of the "violations" of GMO patents. The internet is ridiculous that way. I found an awesome link the other day and sent it along to a professor I'd never really even spoken to outside of the classroom. She wrote back congratulating me on my graduation, saying that she'd come across my Facebook.
Anyway, I never had twelve pluses on my "A" paper, but I did have one professor demand a meeting to discuss my future and how I ought not to squander it. Dropped the ball on that one!

I thought your comment was quite amusing when I first saw it. It is only now after TDGal shot it down that seems lame. :)
Well you are pretty maternal, what with whiskey care packages and all.
I am a strong believer in having a good relationship with your professors. Especially if you go to a small school. That is, after all, precisely what you are paying for. They are an excellent resource for anything from academic references and finding jobs, to every day advice for personal issues.
Excellent recovery spin. You are made for politics my friend. :D

What's the course and what do you mean "shouldn't even be taking?"
Also, congrats!
The course in question is English 201. I was exempted form all writing requirements due to my SAT score, but my my previous adviser enrolled me into English 101 without checking my DARS(Degree Audit Report System) report. And just to be 'consistent' and complete the unnecessary sequence, I followed up by signing up for English 201.:o
That was stupid of me, as I could've done Economics 205:Money and Banking or CSE 115:Intro to Computer Science. The former is not available till next fall :(, the latter I can take in the summer.

Its fun but not necessary, and I feel like I'm wasting my parent's money on this and the Intro to Ethics I'm taking, which signed up for as I had mistaken notions of there being a prospect of my becoming a lawyer in this country; And thus pursuing a philosophy of law minor.:o
Now I'm more interested in Physics, Calculus, Economics, and Computer Science, and hope to combine all of them into some program.

Well... I don't think English, philosophy, etc. classes are ever (or rarely) a waste. A lot of people at my school would complain about being forced to take non-major relevant courses. But that's what liberal arts is all about.
I had to take hard sciences and labs, even though it had nothing to do with my majors, and I think I'm better for it.

I was exempt from English(/Composition) 1 and 2, too. While I'm super glad I didn't have to waste my time and money on them, I think I probably could have gotten something out of them (confidence wielding the semicolon, perhaps?). It was definitely strange being an English major without ever having taken Comp 1 or 2.
When you take your computer science courses please tell me how you like them. I've become very interested in programming lately.

Random thought of the day:
I've always wondered if I'm a post whore? :ummm:
I mean, I can just log on this forum (or any other forum) and fire off a dozen posts/replies on a dozen different topics, just about every day.
But other 'seemingly normal' people just don't do that. Seems that most 'normal' people don't feel all that inclined to share their statements, thought and/or opinons on whatever. That has always seemed odd to me.
So am I a post whore? Honest opinions are welcome. :)

Gemini in the third house you say?
I can remember many, many long days in during 1994-1995, sitting on what we called the Burlington hill or downing pints in the Phoenix, talking for hours and missing classes that I was supposed to be in while Michael held court with a few of us who were less inclined to sit through a tutorial run by a pre-Socratic nitwit and more inclined to understand the term "liberal arts education" in its broadest manifestations. You have always been attracted to communicating with people to find out their ideas and interests no matter how different they were from you. You didn't suffer fools though, that's where you drew your line  Communication excites you and draws your interest. I see your attention to detail in having conversations via this medium as an extension of that.

You are The Herder of Cats so....you are kinda "obligated" to be involved. I'm not intending that to sound bad. You keep the forum going on all levels.
I do agree with Non. You are edumacated on several topics which adds to your diversity. Not a bad thing :)
Someone said this awhile ago about getting the news around the world here on the forum. I do that frequently. Good sources. Good opinions. I soak it in quietly . Seriously though. I do.
On a side note, I don't think people hang around because a majority of the members here don't placate and make people feel good about the issues going on. I like that. People like for hot air to be blown up their asses. You're not going to find that here. I guess the old saying, "if it's too hot, then get out of the kitchen" applies here. I could be wrong. The world is fucked up and for the most part, we (those who hang around) have the same mindset of what is going on/what is going to happen. Those that join and don't hang around just do not have that. They want to feel good about whatever/whoever. Here it ain't like that.

Actually, Gemini is my 1st house, and my moon is there too with my chart ruler in the 3rd, so that's actually a much stronger form of the same concept! :D
I also have a grand mutable cross which includes my moon in Gemini and sun in Sagittarius (yes, I was born under a full moon!).

Yes, that's a good point about the activity level here. People do like to have their biases reinforced and generally don't enjoy having them deconstructed.
That being said, I really do like to have my own biases challenged. There is always an open invitation for that! That indeed is probably why I do post so much - I want to give people lots of ammunition to help them attack my biases.
I may not make it easy for people to do that, but I do welcome and respect thoughtful attempts! :D

Perhaps. Or perhaps you're just more interested in more things than I am/we are.
I don't post in threads that don't interest me. If a conversation gets tiresome I don't try to bring it back on course. I'm just sort of here. Existing. Passively.

That's perhaps due to the fact that American mass-market beer is so incredidbly watery and very low in alcohol content.

Just starting to get over a VERY nasty insta-flu that the boy brought back from his trip down south. I figure someone decided it was a good idea to travel with this disease and infected a bunch of people on the plane/in the aeroport. It hit him three days after returning home and hit me and his mother two days after that. We were both out of commission and needed a small team of friends to come over just to watch him and handle the farm animals. What a nightmare. It is hopefully all done with now. I rarely get the flu and am almost never sick. Children offer new possibilities over your previous health track record.
