Microsoft to offer free security

In a surprise move, Microsoft has announced it will offer a free anti-virus and security solution from the second half of next year.

It will stop selling OneCare, its all-in-one security and PC management service, from the end of June 2009.

The new software, code-named Morro, will be a no-frills program suited to smaller and less powerful computers.

The software will be free to download and will support Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.

Well this is an interesting development. Free is always popular. Looks like this might be anti-spyware as well.

Personally, I consider both McAfee and Norton to be extremely invasive software programs that are as annoying as they are useful. There is certainly a big place in the market for 'better' av services beyond this duopoly. Whether Microsoft can deliver that is a different story.

This may sound crazy but I don't run any anti-virus software at all so this is great news for me. Believe it or not I've been doing this for years and never had a problem.

Same here, I stopped running it a couple of years ago when I started noticing
each upgrade made things a little slower. I went into the registry and it looked like every other line was dedicated to Norton.

Ditto for me. Pretty bad when the cure is as bad as the disease.
