‘Grand Prince of All Russia’ Valery Kubarev Sues to Get Kremlin Back (http://xenophilius.wordpress.com/2010/08/19/grand-prince-of-all-russia-valery-kubarev-sues-to-get-kremlin-back/)

Descendants of Russia’s first ruling dynasty have gone to court to reclaim their ancestral lands – specifically, the Kremlin. On Monday, the Moscow Arbitration Court decided the case will be heard Oct. 18. The plaintiff is the Princes’ Foundation for the Advancement of Religious and National Consensus, founded in May 2009 by Valery Kubarev, who traces his lineage to the Rurik dynasty. It was under the reign of Rurik grand princes, Kubarev claims, that the Kremlin was constructed.
According to its website, the foundation seeks “usage rights” to the Kremlin “in perpetuity.”
Although the foundation’s audacious claim seems to have little chance of succeeding, the suit arises as the Russian government is returning numerous buildings and other property to the Russian Orthodox Church.
In a surprise move, the court not only agreed to hear the case, but also granted the Princes’ Foundation’s request for official documentation regarding the status of the architectural elements of the Kremlin and of the underlying land.
The defendants are the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture and the Federal Agency for State Property Management (Rosimushchestvo). A lawyer for Rosimushchestvo told the newspaper Rossiiskaia Gazeta that the Kremlin is the property of the Russian state, but admits that at the current time no property rights to the historic complex have been registered.
That is precisely the point, Kubarev maintains.
“The court noted that there is no document that proves that the Kremlin is somebody’s property. All we have is a presidential decree that says that the Kremlin is his residence,” Kubarev said. “Well, I could write my own decree, too.” …

Well, first of all, as far as I know the whole Kremlin complex is a protected UNESCO world heritage site and that is why it or any part of it cannot be owned by individuals, at least as far as I know. Second, Where is this guy's proof he descends from Rurik? I can come to court and say: I descend from some Tsar or Archduke, give me a palace! Just like all the Romanovs that came out of every hole in the ground, like moles in that game, after USSR fell apart in 1991. The Romanovs I, at least, knew of before, there are two sets of them, both wealthy, with big shot lawyers, fighting and feuding like crazy, calling each other 'phonies', 'wannabes', 'impostors', etc, on national TV channels, and in court... But, these guys, so-called Rurikovichi... I mean Rurik lived, what, 1,200 years ago? How do you prove you are related to someone who lived that long ago?

For what its worth, the Rurik dynasty ruled from 1283 to 1598, ending with the "Time of Troubles" (1598 to 1613)

The Romanovs established their rule beginning in 1613 with Mikail. Peter the Great was a grandson of that Mikail.

As for the court challenge, I'm certain that the Russian State has a better legal claim to the Kremlin than any alleged descendant of the Rurik dynasty.

Btw, Stuart claims in Britain and/or Capet/Valois/Bourbon/Orleans claims in France have no legal standing. I can't see how Rurik can have any claim in Russia.

You know, my great-great-grandfather was a Count, under the Romanovs. There is a mansion here in Moscow that I'd have a good case claiming. But it houses the HQ of a company that Putin himself happens to partially own. I'll never have a chance lol
