Japan is concerned by the holding of Russia's Vostok-2010 military drills on Iturup Island, the largest of the disputed South Kuril Islands, Japan's Kyodo news agency said.

"This is extremely regretful. As far as we know, there have never been such drills there," Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada told reporters late on Tuesday.

The Russian Armed Forces started large-scale Vostok-2010 military exercises in Siberia and the country's Far East on June 29. The drills, which involve at least 20,000 troops, up to 70 warplanes and 30 warships, will continue through Thursday.

Okada said that Japan had earlier told Russia about its objections to the drills, but to no avail.

hahaha Of course there was 'no avail'. Japan is nothing. Russia doesn't give a damn what they have to say LMAO

Japanese want Kurils? Let them try to take them from us. Let them try. :)

The problem with blustering about military power is that there is usually someone else out there with a bigger military power.

Sure its easy to pick on Japan. Would you say the same about USA and/or China? (the two countries that do have the ability to take the Kuril islands).

A. China doesn't want Kuril Islands; USA has no reason to get involved there in any way.
B. War with Russia vs China, Russia vs USA, Russia and China vs USA, Russia and USA vs China, whatever, in the end, you are talking about nuclear war. The end of the world; at least, the end of the world as we know it. Nobody will let it go that far.

Even a veiled threat from Russia to Japan is a direct issue for the USA. USA has 100% subsumed responsibility for the defense of Japan.

But that's beside the point. Military bluster last worked well in the 19th century. In the 20th it only led to millions of deaths. As such, I cannot countenance any military blustering as anything but stupid warmongering.

I agree. My Navy days got the better of me. I actually served right there on the front line, at Sakhalin, at one point. Had my run-ins with the Japanese. Nobody talks about it, but there had been shots exchanged. They are arrogant, stubborn bastards. So are we :) It is a bad situation.

Something about the military tends to bring out the belligerence in otherwise civilized peoples.

There is no shortage of military hotspots and/or disputed borders around the globe. Getting hot about them does nobody any good.
