Are you Ruskies going to apologize for anarchism, terrorism and nihilism? (all famously 19th century Russian in origin)

If you do, then we'll apologize for inflicting goth style on Russia!

I actually like the goths. They are harmless enough. :)

Ok, on behalf of my country I apologize for all those things. :)

Okay, then on behalf of the Brits, we'll apologize for inventing 'goth-style' and inflicting it on Russia!

Nihilism makes sense. Goth could be a result of nihilism. lol It is rather depressing that there is no ultimate meaning, and god is a figment of our imaginations.

On the surface perhaps, but I think 'gothism' is the polar opposite of real nihilism (as opposed to the fashionable variety).

Real nihilism asserts that nothing has any real meaning. Gothism is all about individuals creating meaning for themselves through aesthetics.

In this respect, goth-style is very much in the 'romantic' tradition and is indeed, post-modern as well - and the opposite of nihilism. :)

Btw, in my quick research of 'goth style', I was quite amused to discover that Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" is the origin of goth subculture! I remember when that song came out (I was a young laddie then) and I have long considered that tune to be one of my all time favs!

That haunting sound is so cool!

Meaning for one's self is subjective. There is no ultimate meaning. That is nihilism. I like the tune. :)

Meaning for one's self is only subjective when looked at from a pseudo-objective third-party perspective. From a subjective perspective, it isn't subjective at all. Indeed, most people perceive their own subjectivity as objective.

That's not nihilism. That's absurdism.

One person's subjective opinion is nothing when compared with everyone else's subjective opinions. There is no Ultimate. Someone with the perception that he or she has an objective opinion is clearly arrogant or misled.

How many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Two. One to complain over how screwing in lightbulbs used to be cool, and one to screw the lightbulb in ironically.

Alternatively the classic: It's a really obscure number, you've probably never heard of it.

I understand(from wikipedia and others) that these hipsters are an ostensibly pretentious people who fetishize all things obscure and 'alternative', but what exactly are they? Would you mind explaining in some detail?
Particularly why they are to be despised?

The piece that is missing from your understanding here is that Hipsters are definitely upscale and urban (and usually well educated).

And that pretty much explains everything if you understand American culture has a fetish for anti-intellectualism and rural living. Ergo, hipsters symbolically represent that which is generally hated in US culture.

American culture has a wierd obsession with believing that farmers in Nebraska are "true Americans" because they are hardworking and honest people (and mostly uneducated). This is contrasted with the upscale "city-slickers" with their high-falutin' big words and fancy clothes (and lies and bullshit).

Indeed, the term "hipster" appears to be just the 21st century version of what was called "Yuppies" back in the 1980's and 1990's, with the addition of 'obscure tastes' in music/clothing/literature/housing.
