Just for fun...
Everyone has either read LOTR or seen the movies, so the question is, of all the characters in the epic tale, which one do you identify with (or which character do you like the best)???
Personally, I'm with Gandalf. That role of mysterious and wise old man who helps others appeals to me.

Well, the character I'm most drawn to is Strider, which is to say, the Aragorn in the first parts of the story when he was less kingly. I like the idea of the shadowy, mysterious protector with the broken sword. But, except in day dreams, I can hardly say I relate to that kind of character.
At the moment, utterly bogged own in school work and research, I indentify mostly with Bilbo, feeling like "butter scraped over too much bread" and wanting primarily to just live in Rivendale and finish my book. :)

I would actually choose ......J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Creating a consistent mythology from the day of Creation all the way to the historical times of Britain is just such a monumental feat, especially as it is further embellished with the creation of a dozen languages which are linguistically plausible. I wouldn't be half proud if I had such an achievement under the belt.
As for actual LOTR personae, I'm not really a participative reader. But if pressed I would pick Éowyn and Faramir.

I can't really identify with any of the characters, with me being female and stuff. I guess I feel a little like Smaug? ;)

I would say Frodo for the most part. He is pretty average but has a good heart. I would like to think the ring would not turn me into such a prick though.

Not even the Lady of the Wood - Galadriel?
She's very regal and has a commanding presence... :)

I've always found Boromir perhaps the most real of the characters in the series, and hence the most identifiable, even if I don't particularly share all of his traits.

Boromir seems like the ONLY character with any flaws at all in LOTR.
The only other 'flawed' characters are all evil or under some magic spell.
I admit that makes Boromir an interesting character - but are you not suggesting that a character has to have flaws in order to be real or human-like?

I find the musings and careful contemplation of the Ents appealing, so I'd consider Treebeard or one of the other Ents.

It's been a long time since I've read the books, but I recall Merry and Pippin being somewhat mischievous and, at the least, possessed of a dangerous curiosity and immaturity at the beginning of the story.
Also, what about Denethor? I wouldn't call him "evil," at least not on the level of the real bad guys in the story.

I am indeed. I would say that some of the other Humans are also flawed... most of the characters seem to be distilled qualities or ideals.
I love LOTR, but I definitely love real feeling characters too, which is why I like Graham Greene so much.
