The follow-up to the thread title, if there was room, would be "...more concerned about state secrets"

I don't understand this. Am I missing something or have the Russians openly talked about their politicians being visited by space aliens at some earlier date? The more pressing issue to those in power seems to be whether any state secrets were revealed to the aliens rather than the fact that fucking aliens landed on the planet!!! They're more concerned with procedure of their bureaucrats than the presence of an alien culture in our solar system, let alone landing on the fucking planet!!! Did I say that already? I'm just imagining the raucous laughter that would erupt around the country if a Canadian politician announced this so plainly. There is definitely something afoot here.

I bet Jimmy Carter is fucking pissed(/jealous)!!

I have a theory that the over-arcing big-picture Russian culture is one based entirely on boredom.

And that's why I want to be Russian.

Actually, I've always pickup up 'French' vibes from Russia. They are somewhat like the French in many ways (culturally speaking). Indeed, the Americans are somewhat like the French as well, but in entirely different way (mostly political).

I've had that impression, too. My high school history teacher used to joke that Russian eagle has two heads because the Russian people never knew which way to look: west to European culture, or East to a more...eastern culture.

I think the sisters in Chekhov's "Three Sisters" pine for Paris (I can't remember, though, it may have just been Moscow that they missed).

However, I see your French offer, and counter with this: a culture of boredom. (http://englishrussia.com/)

Hard to dispute your 'evidence'.

The fake book covers had me

As far as 'French' style goes, I see the Russians having a similar passion for food and clothing (appearances matter!).
