O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
blessed Easter Everyone!

Good. Now maybe he can get down to getting rid of my hangover.

While I don't recognize the purported event, happy Easter to the faithful, all retailers and restaurants in their celebrations.

Personally, I've never been able to figure out what chocolate bunnies and painted eggs (let alone egg-hunts) have to do with the resurrection of Jesus, but hey, I'm just an ignorant atheist!
Either way, Happy Easter to one and all!

Christ Has Risen!
Christ has risen indeed! :)
Happy Easter to everyone!
Regardless of what significance this day holds for you, I hope you have a glorious spring day. Philly is 72 and sunny, trees are in bloom and birds are out; it could hardly be a better day to celebrate new life. :)

probably something left over from when the day was a pagan holiday (plagiarism being a well accepted tradition in Christian history ;))

makes me happy to have someone know the liturgical forms

I spent five hours pH testing various growing media components and my primary mix. A very satisfying Sunday.

Well, yeah this is an interesting one. Easter originates in name from the Teutonic goddess Eostre, or Ostara in the modern pagan rendering. For us the holiday celebrating her is synonymous with the spring equinox, usually around March 21st. Ostara was the goddess of fertility and this partly explains her associated symbolism with rabbits and eggs, both being symbols of fertility themselves. There is a story in the pagan community, the origin of which I have yet to track down to my own satisfaction, that carries in it the basic theme that Eostre changed her pet bird into a rabbit to entertain some children and that it began laying coloured eggs.
Being a chicken keeper myself, I have my own theory. In the springtime, when the chickens are again exposed to sufficient light in their day, they begin to lay eggs again. Because they've spent the winter without this daily practice they begin laying eggs in unexpected places. You kind of have to hunt around for eggs again once spring arrives. A friend of mine always identifies his eggs with various markings in the spring because he lets the chickens brood them naturally. If an egg stays out too long without a hen on it, then he takes it for himself. When he brings the eggs in they have all manner of shapes and symbols on them. He didn't really do it for the intention of decorating the eggs but for keeping track of how old they were so that he didn't take it a rotten egg or leave a rotten one out to be sat on by a hen. Just a thought.
As far as chocolate goes, my guess is this is a treat to the Catholic kids who just spent the last 40 days likely having no sweets in their diets. What a treat it was to be allowed a cavalcade of sweets on Easter morning! And of course, the rest I attribute to the marketing vultures of the mid-20th century.
