The South Dakota Senate has passed a resolution to amend climate/environmental science education standards.
original:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the House of Representatives of the Eighty-fifth Legislature of the State of South Dakota, the Senate concurring therein, that the South Dakota Legislature urges that instruction in the public schools relating to global warming include the following:
(1) That global warming is a scientific theory rather than a proven fact;
(2) That there are a variety of climatological, meteorological, astrological, thermological, cosmological, and ecological dynamics that can effect [sic] world weather phenomena and that the significance and interrelativity of these factors is largely speculative; and
(3) That the debate on global warming has subsumed political and philosophical viewpoints which have complicated and prejudiced the scientific investigation of global warming phenomena; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Legislature urges that all instruction on the theory of global warming be appropriate to the age and academic development of the student and to the prevailing classroom circumstances.
Amended one which passed (http://legis.state.sd.us/sessions/2010/Amendment.aspx?Amend=amdc1009tb.htm)
Roll call. (http://legis.state.sd.us/sessions/2010/RollCall.aspx?Vote=1676)

Kinda pathetic when the rightwing is reduced to having to legislate their mythology. Really getting into Orwellian territory here when the government seeks to define 'truth'.
Same process as in Texas with the schoolbook bullshit.
Especially amusing has to be the old "is just a theory" part. Nothing screams ignorance or uneducated more than that statement.
(gravity, light and time are all just theories)

From the text "significance and inter-relativity of these factors is largely speculative" says it all. Read that bible for any information you kids need and don't question it.

Homeschool your kids.
That's not feasible for the majority of working parents.

Yeah I know... and I don't think it will be feasible for me either. I guess all thoughtful parents can do is try to teach their kids to believe that their teachers might be lying.

There are states, and areas within states, where I'd be reluctant to use public schooling in educating a child. I'm living in one such state but have no child-rearing responsibilities.
The press of bible belt states and other areas to meld mythology into education is pathetic. Our educational systems are already deteriorating to a point where more fairy tales is the last thing kids need in preparing them to enter the reality of general society as adults.

Astrological? Thermalogical? WTF.... That is beyond stupid. SD children are going to be taught astrology to balance actual climate science?????
Something i have been thinking about for a while now, and this really confirms it, is that all legislative bodies on this continent need to be given a course on climate science 101. Attendance mandatory.

How about just science 101. You know, what is scientific theory? What is the scientific method? What is an hypothesis?
Unfreakingreal.

This is a bit nitpicky, but I don't think the [sic] is warranted. Effect as a verb makes sense in that context.

It can make sense, but "affect" would almost certainly be better, imho.

I think "effect" would be preferred. If it had said "effect the climate", it would have been wrong, but it talks about "effecting [phenomena]", which seems to fit the "bring about" model: "my hurricane creation machine effected a hurricane."
