Nice place and seemingly full of intelligent and thoughtful members. That's rather hard to come by these days. Politically, I am neither left, right, nor center. I have no religion, and no real loyalties except to the few family and friends I have. I don't care about popularity or political correctness, and I often annoy people. There's my introduction.

I'm pregnant. I don't think the doctors or cs would approve. They test for it at the hospital in TN. Also, we're trying to save money so it seemed logical to quit.

If you test positive do they imprison you and the baby? Or in TN is it Old Sparky time?

That makes sense. I've been considering quieting again because my job is unpredictable and a back up plan is that I can get a position at another company that gives drug tests.

Child Services in Tennessee takes kids away for a variety of reasons, many of which are based on something a simple as a false accusation. Why take chances?

My husband quit almost three years ago, and the place where he works now does random testing. Also, if he were to be injured at work, or even end up an a car accident because of no fault of his own, we wouldn't receive a dime. Of course, he could be a falling down drunk or a pill head..no prob. It just makes me wanna sing the National Anthem when i think about it.

I'd venture to say there are few to no agnostic/atheist mods on PCF. Which wouldn't bother me if they could keep their bias to themselves and remain objective, But......

I still occasionally lurk there to read a few quality posters, but they've become few and far between. It is heavy with students/partisans and I'm so far out of political idealism/dogma those directions, to me, quickly become very boring.

I bailed from PCF when I was pestered by a known rightwing toxic troll (whom I know of from another forum) and sent the troll a pm that said only "Fuck Off Troll".

I got a warning from some moderator for doing that. Apparently that troll is buddy-buddy with some moderator there. Go figure.

Figured that was a sign that the forum was toast.

Always found that forum to be the one of the worst - never liked it at all.

I like it there for the simple fact that it is amusing, and there are several posters there that I can learn from. It's a simple fact that almost any source, forum, newspaper, the news, etc, is mostly garbage (not this one, tho :D) and one has to pick through garbage to find something worth while. PFC is the first political forum I became a member of, but since then I have expanded my horizons a bit.

Clicking that link just reminded me how annoying that slow server is over there.

Btw, Daktoria is a member here as well. I do quite enjoy the many long-winded debates he and I have had here. :)

Indeed, I had to curb my desire to debate one of Daktoria's points there about brands. Seems I have slap him upside the head with Hegel again! People don't buy stuff to satisfy their egos (that's capitalist thinking), people buy stuff to create their identity (fetishization of commodities!). No surprises that they favor brand names - that's group-acceptance for their identity without even having to try!

And that moderator's comment is totally the kind of comment that would have me walking away from that forum - even if it wasn't addressed to me. I won't comment upon which moderator was the one that annoyed me over there... :D

Instead, since I found that the forum automatically logged me in, I posted a comment in reply to some member who was showing her ignorance and dissing Daktoria. :D

Yes, people do tend to stick with the first forum they join up with even when it turns toxic ugly down the road. I'm not one for sticking around toxic forums as that seems to just encourage the forum administrators into believing that they are doing a good job when they aren't.

I think it's both. Ego is important to many people's identies, particularly in western culture. It gives people an excuse to look down on others. It shows low self esteem and conformity, which I abhor.

Every forum probably gets "toxic" once it gets big. If this place gets bigger, you'll need more mods and it is hard to find good ones, even in the best of situations.

Interesting. If I had of known, I might have made an offer. I would have preferred to buy an established forum rather than create a new one from scratch as that is way less work.

Too late now though. :)

Consumerism for the purpose of identity construction is the only meaningful and rational explanation of the phenomena and enduring popularity of consumerism (despite the fact that we know that consumerism is killing the planet).

Lumina is a special case. And what she said to me about wanting to be a mod..priceless. I loved it because I'm seriously The last person to try and get such a position.

I noticed a long time ago that those who desperately want/need to be moderators tend to make the absolute worst and most biased moderators.

I'd consider an emphatic denial of wanting to be a moderator and excellent qualification to be a moderator! :D

Cool, so if i come across any other gems, I can post them here.

Yes, this is generally true. However, given that we don't allow trolls or idiots here, this forum is quite unlikely to grow very large since trolls and idiots seem to make up about half of all large forum memberships. :D

As it stands, we do have a pretty good system here where several of our regular members act as 'unofficial moderators' and alert me to things that might need moderator-type attention. This enables me to be aware of pretty much everything that happens at this forum without me having to be obsessively sitting here all day watching it.

There's some question as to the validity of the owner wanting to sell, then or now. The owner, for all practical purposes, had reportedly abandoned interest in the forum some time ago due to health and personal issues. The forum software had originally been customized by a former site admin, who left to pursue a paying career, and then neglected to a point where crashes became common. Band aids have been applied after two major crashes but anyone who visits the site knows from slow load times and frequent inability to connect to the database it's another big crash waiting to happen.

I doubt you'd want that place now. It would require more work than establishing a new one, believe me.

That's where the ego comes in. People do things knowing that they are acting at the expense of others..they just don't care.

I'd say closer to three quarters.

That works. Other places have a fairly detailed hierarchy with a special mod forum where mods can talk about members behind their backs with no accountability. Perhaps a mod forum is necessary but on the otherhand, posters are unable to defend themselves from unfair accusations or ridicule.

Heynow has it, he just hasn't been interested for some time.

What he doesn't realize is that PCF could possibly be a profitable forum. I have researched this, and it is possible to make a significant amount of income from ads under the right circumstances. A good position on google search engine, updated forum software, a good server, solid members, and reasonable moderation can equal a reasonable income, though people aren't likely to get rich or anything.
